I updated my iphone to ios 27 and, when I connected it to my mac (OS 10.13.6) received a message that an update was required. When I tried to do the update I got an unspecific network error message. Happened on two different macs. Any ideas what's happening? Thanks.

It should work - but for the past several years, there have been threads about trouble managing iPhones running the latest version of iOS from Macs running High Sierra. I could be wrong, but it seems very hit and miss as to who gets hit with the problem and who doesn't.
I do not know if your particular error message might be related to another change that Apple made recently: raising the minimum requirement for iCloud from High Sierra to Mojave.
It should work.
Perhaps it really is a network problem. Try again some other time.
Rule out the usual causes... non-Apple "security" products, "coffee shop" VPNs, that sort of junk. Ought to go without saying.
Also make sure the devices' Wi-Fi is NOT set to use "Low Data mode" which reportedly might prevent OS downloads (thanks to Neuroanatomist for this tip).
