Can anyone suggest how I can proceed I was just trying to redeem an appple gift card and wanted to dl some music and books?

Welcome!

That model code appears to return to an iPad 2 but those order numbers vary with the country/region for which the iPad was produced. They can be inexact. As a check, please flip the iPad over and look in the fine print for an "A" followed by four digits. Example from my iPad 2:

What do you see?

For security reasons, please DO NOT post a serial number or an image thereof.

If it is an iPad 2, you may never be able to log in or even activate it. In late 2025 Apple changed the minimum iPad system requirements for iCloud services to iPadOS 11, a version that cannot run on iPad 1 through 4, and the iPad Mini Gen 1.

Apple documentation: System requirements for iCloud - Apple Support

I see that as of Sept 20 2026, that minimum moved to v12.

Although activation is not specifically mentioned in the article, since last November large numbers of users here with older iPad are reporting what you found— they cannot log in or activate their devices.

If that is the case, I know of little you can do. Even backing up to a computer requires a passcode.

If you get as far as being sent a six-digit verification code for an iPad that can only accept 4-digit codes, this MacWorld article might hold a spark of hope:
