Dissolve effect on photos within slides transitions unexpectedly

I have a lengthy presentation of 140 slides. It is on historical photos and I want to dissolve the original into a better enhanced one after the audience sees the original for about 10 seconds. I don't want the slides to dissolve but rather the 1st of two photos on each slide as I get there. At first it worked and then it started transitioning between slides or going black. Should I just buy PowerPoint?

I'm not following exactly. But what I do is show the first picture on transition, perhaps with dissolve, and then Build-In by dissolve the second picture that's "on top" of the first one. There's no need to remove the bottom picture.

Here's two pictures, Cave and Blinded

Blinded is on top of Cave in the Object list. Blinded builds in by dissolve 10 seconds after transitioning to this slide.

You are, of course, welcome to use PowerPoint, but that's not really a concern of this community.
