AppleCare+ coverage for US MacBook Pro in Portugal

I am permanently relocating from the United States to Portugal in December 2026.

I intend to purchase a new 16-inch MacBook Pro and maybe an Apple TV 4K in the United States before relocating.

An Apple representative told me that I could purchase Portuguese AppleCare coverage for a U.S.-purchased MacBook while it remains within Apple's original one-year limited warranty. The representative indicated this policy was documented in Apple Support Communities.

However, I have been unable to locate the relevant discussion or official policy.

I have two questions:

1. Can I purchase Portuguese AppleCare+ after relocating to Portugal for a MacBook originally purchased in the United States, provided it is still within its original one-year warranty?

2. Alternatively, if I purchase three-year AppleCare+ coverage in the United States, will Apple Authorized Service Providers in Portugal perform covered repairs, including accidental damage and battery replacement, without requiring the MacBook to be returned to the United States?

I would particularly appreciate responses from anyone who has purchased a MacBook in the United States, subsequently relocated to Portugal (or another EU country), and obtained AppleCare coverage or service there.

If anyone knows of an official Apple policy addressing these questions, please provide a link.

Thank you.

Wait.

Apple documents in their Legal section should be the binding rules. Employees can be under-informed.

For AppleCare+ in the US, it is this binding document for computers:

https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/2608/260825_applecareplusmac_us.pdf

It includes this paragraph (screenshot):

The bold is Apple's, not mine.

The AppleCare One document has versions for each US state, but include a similar disclaimer:

https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/2610/261013_applecareone_us.pdf

That is as official as we end-users can be. I suspect that some Apple employees do not know how to look up legal documents re warranty terms and conditions of coverage.

If an employee tells you it's covered out of country, get their name and employee ID and put an attorney on retainer. You may need both.

I’d (re)confirm your info and plans with Apple Support.

AFAIK…

I’ve not heard of purchasing AppleCare for another country.

AppleCare is usually only available within 60 days of purchase.

AppleCare One coverage can be purchased past that 60 day window and with some limitations, but AppleCare One is not available in Portugal.

Some info: Get AppleCare coverage for your Apple device - Apple Support

And a footnote: ”Service coverage is provided under the Terms and Conditions of your AppleCare plan applicable to your state. Service coverage outside the country of purchase of your AppleCare plan is not guaranteed. The availability and type of service option may vary depending on your device model, applicable local laws, regulations, and legal requirements, and the capabilities of Apple Authorized Service Providers in the location where and when service is requested. Some service options may not be available in all areas. If service is available and repair is possible, Apple may, at its discretion, offer to repair or replace your device using locally sourced models or parts that meet local standards and regulations, which may differ from the original device in terms of color and/or specifications. Availability of international replacement for lost or stolen devices is not guaranteed and is subject to availability and may vary by region, model, and device configuration. For details, please review the Terms and Conditions applicable to your region at AppleCare One Terms and Conditions, AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions, and Theft and Loss Insurance Documentation.”

And for completeness, it’s best to buy the gear in the country you play to use the gear.

If you are relocating, then you should purchase a computer in the region your are going to be so that you will know that the Apple Stores and AASPs will be able to access the parts needed for your computer. While most parts are available worldwide, the Top Case/Keyboard Assembly which includes the palmrest and many times the Battery are region specific due to the various region specific Keyboards used.

Who knows whether a US Keyboard part will be available outside the US. Even if it is available, it could take much longer to receive it since it may need to be imported.

Keep in mind many Apple agents are clueless on the more obscure issues and can even misinterpret Apple's own documentation which is not always clear. I suggest you read Apple's warranty documentation....IIRC, there are notes & exceptions for part availability for devices from a different region, but I don't recall the exact details.
