Camera view remains vertical when screen mirroring to TV on iOS 27

Camera no longer displays in landscape mode when screen mirroring to a tv in iOS 27. The symbols on the camera screen seem to rotate, but the tv still displays the screen vertically. This wasn’t the case on previous versions. I’m wondering if this wasn’t intentional or a bug. It’s unfortunate because I found the feature very useful.

I’m experiencing exactly the same issue on both my iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro after upgrading to iOS 27.

Interestingly, a similar issue occasionally occurred on iOS 26, particularly when using the native Camera app in Video mode while screen mirroring to Apple TV. However, I was always able to work around it by switching from Video → Photo → Video. This would correctly rotate the mirrored camera view into landscape orientation.

Unfortunately, since upgrading to iOS 27, this workaround no longer works at all.

The Camera app’s interface appears to rotate correctly when I turn my iPhone horizontally, but the mirrored display on Apple TV remains stuck in portrait orientation. Other apps, such as Safari, rotate correctly without any issues.

What’s particularly interesting is that Blackmagic Camera works perfectly fine in the exact same setup. When I use Blackmagic Camera and mirror my iPhone to Apple TV via AirPlay, the TV display rotates correctly into landscape orientation, exactly as expected.

This strongly suggests that the issue is specific to Apple’s native Camera app rather than AirPlay, Apple TV, or the iPhone’s orientation settings.

I personally prefer using Apple’s native Camera app, especially for its video quality and Dolby Vision HDR capabilities. However, I’m now forced to use Blackmagic Camera simply because it handles landscape screen mirroring correctly.

I really hope Apple investigates and fixes this issue in an upcoming iOS 27 update. Landscape camera mirroring is an important feature for my use case, and losing functionality that previously worked is extremely frustrating.

If by Camera, you mean the Photos app, and your photos are no longer displaying in landscape orientation on your TV when you use Screen Mirroring, there are a few things we need to clarify before identifying the cause.

First, I am not sure whether you are mirroring your iPhone's screen to the TV using AirPlay wirelessly or a cable. The method you use is important when troubleshooting this issue.

Under normal circumstances, when you use Screen Mirroring to display your iPhone's screen on a TV, the TV mirrors the content displayed on your iPhone. For example, if you open a photo that was captured in landscape orientation, the photo should retain its original orientation. Rotating your iPhone does not change the orientation in which the photo was captured or stored.

However, there is an important distinction between the orientation of the photo itself and the orientation of the iPhone's screen. A landscape photo can remain a landscape photo even when the Photos app or the mirrored iPhone screen is displayed vertically. Similarly, rotating your iPhone does not necessarily force the TV to change its display orientation.

If you are using AirPlay and notice that the symbols or controls on your iPhone rotate when you turn the device, but the TV continues displaying the mirrored screen vertically, this may indicate that the iPhone's screen orientation and the TV's display orientation are not changing in the way you expect. The exact behaviour can depend on the iPhone, the TV, and how AirPlay is handling the display.

To understand your issue more clearly, could you please confirm two things?

  1. Are you using AirPlay (wireless Screen Mirroring) or connecting your iPhone to the TV using a cable?
  2. When you open a landscape photo in the Photos app, does the photo itself appear vertically on the TV, or does the entire mirrored iPhone screen remain in portrait orientation?

These details will help distinguish a problem with the photo's display from an issue with screen orientation during mirroring.

No, I in fact do not mean the photos app. I mean sharing the screen via the native screen mirroring function and then displaying the camera app. I share it to my screen for certain camera work so I can have a large live display. It would rotate into landscape in prior version of iOS. After, 27 it does not, it only displays vertical with the what the camera is seeing displayed sideways. And yes I obviously checked if orientation lock was on.
