MacBook Neo unexpectedly enters macOS Recovery when running qwen chatbot

I'm using a MacBook Neo, and I recently had a strange issue.

I was running Qwen AI in Agent Mode in Chrome for around two hours while trying to generate a Scratch project. During that time, my Mac unexpectedly shut down and started up in macOS Recovery.

After restarting, my Mac returned to the normal desktop with my usual wallpaper and settings. However, Chrome displayed an “Error” message in the corner.

I'm relieved that my Mac is working again, and I use iCloud Drive with Optimize Mac Storage enabled for my files.

I'm not sure whether the AI agent, Chrome, macOS, or another issue caused this, so I'd appreciate help understanding what might have happened.

My questions:

  1. Why might a MacBook Neo unexpectedly enter macOS Recovery?
  2. Could a long-running browser session contribute to a system crash, or might this be unrelated?
  3. How can I check whether macOS recorded a crash or startup error?
  4. Should I take any further steps if the Mac currently starts normally?

Thanks for any help!

Sorry to be late.

You may have done the tech equivalent of bringing a knife to a gunfight. The NEO is a very entry-level device. It has the Apple A18 Pro processors used in the iPhone 16 Pro, not the M-series used in higher-cost MacBook products. It has only 8GB RAM and limited storage (256 to 512GB).

It has no cooling fans. That must be respected. Chatbots, streaming video, and Google Chrome are all high-demand tasks that increase the heat produced by the computer. Apple's thermal protection scheme is to first clock back the processor if internal temperatures begin to approach the danger level. If that does not work, the computer shuts down without an advisory message to save its brains. You may have experienced thermal shutdowns.

The does not explain why Recovery launched however, unless the overheating somehow negatively affected your solid-state storage. How full is your storage?

Suggestions:

— use a different browser. FireFox and Safari may fewer system demands than Chrome.

— Place the NEO on small blocks like Legos to allow cool air under the case.

— Watch Netflix on a difference device.

How can I check whether macOS recorded a crash or startup error?

Under your Apple menu, find "About this Mac.." press the OPTION key to change that to System Information. SI accesses logs. Find "Logs under the "Software section in the left-hand contents pane:
