Troubleshooting WoW Classic Lag on an M4 Mac mini
I have an M4 Mac mini with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB internal SSD. World of Warcraft Classic is installed on a 4 TB external drive connected through a Satechi Thunderbolt hub.
Since upgrading to macOS 27.0 (Golden Gate), I've noticed considerable lag while playing WoW Classic. The Mac mini uses Wi-Fi through an extender in the same room, and the connection appears good. Other computers in the house play the same game over the same Wi-Fi network without noticeable lag.
I'd like to determine whether the problem is related to macOS, the Mac mini's network connection, graphics performance, or the external drive.
1. Check macOS first
Since the problem began after the upgrade, start by checking for a newer stable update. System updates can sometimes affect graphics, networking, or game compatibility.
Go to Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
Install any newer stable update offered.
Restart the Mac mini and test WoW again.

2. Distinguish network lag from graphics stuttering
This is the most important diagnostic step.
- Network lag: Characters freeze, jump around, or rubber-band; latency may fluctuate.
- Graphics lag: The screen stutters, camera movement is jerky, or FPS drops while latency remains stable.
- Loading pauses: Brief freezes occur when entering areas or loading objects.
Press Control + R in WoW to display FPS, then monitor the in-game latency.
If FPS drops but latency stays stable, focus on graphics and system performance. If latency fluctuates while FPS remains steady, investigate the network.
3. Test the Wi-Fi connection
Even though other computers work well, the Mac mini may have an individual wireless connection issue. The extender could also introduce latency or interference.
- Connect the Mac mini directly to the main router's Wi-Fi, bypassing the extender.
- If possible, test using Ethernet.
- Compare WoW's performance after each change.
If Ethernet eliminates the lag, the wireless connection or extender is a likely contributor.

4. Check graphics settings and add-ons
The M4 Mac mini with 16 GB RAM should generally run WoW Classic well.
As a test:
- Set graphics quality to 4 or 5.
- Reduce shadows and liquid detail.
- Temporarily disable V-Sync and optional add-ons.
- Compare FPS in the same area where lag normally occurs.
If performance improves, increase settings one at a time to identify the cause.
5. Investigate the external drive and Satechi hub
Running WoW from an external Thunderbolt drive isn't inherently a problem, but drive performance, a cable or hub issue, or background disk activity could cause loading pauses.
An important question: Are the other computers running WoW from the same physical 4 TB external drive, or does each computer have its own drive?
- Same physical drive: The drive itself becomes a less likely cause, although its connection to the M4 Mac mini could still matter.
- Separate drives: The Mac mini's external storage setup remains worth investigating.
If necessary, temporarily test WoW from the internal SSD, provided sufficient space is available. If it runs smoothly internally but stutters externally, investigate the hub, cable, drive temperature, and drive performance.

6. Check background activity
An OS upgrade can trigger background tasks, such as Spotlight indexing, that consume system resources.
Open Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor and check:
- CPU: Unusually high usage by any process.
- Memory: High Memory Pressure or substantial swap usage.
- Disk activity: Heavy activity while WoW stutters.
Close unnecessary applications and test again.

If the problem persists, use Battle.net's Scan and Repair option to check the game files.
My recommendation
I'd troubleshoot in this order:
- Check for a newer stable macOS update and restart.
- Compare FPS and in-game latency.
- Test directly on the main router or via Ethernet.
- Reduce graphics settings and disable add-ons temporarily.
- Check Activity Monitor.
- Investigate the external drive and hub if the evidence points to storage-related pauses.
The M4 Mac mini isn't obviously underpowered for WoW Classic, so I wouldn't buy additional hardware or replace the drive yet.
The key is to determine whether the lag is network-related, graphics-related, or caused by loading pauses.
That will help identify the cause without unnecessary changes.
