iPhone SE (3rd generation) reverts to silent mode after restart on iOS 27.0.1

iPhone SE (3rd generation) keeps reverting to Silent Mode after restart – iOS 27.0.1

My iPhone SE (3rd generation), model A2783, has developed an intermittent problem where it stops ringing for incoming calls, even though the physical Ring/Silent switch on the top left-hand side remains in the ring position.

I also lose the charging confirmation tone when plugging in the charger. The phone still vibrates, but makes no sound.

What I have discovered so far:

  • The ringtone and charging tone work normally after moving the Ring/Silent switch to Silent Mode and then back to ring mode.
  • If I restart the phone without touching the switch, it reverts to silent again.
  • Moving the switch back and forth restores the sounds.
  • The switch has a positive click in both positions.
  • I have checked the ringtone volume and adjusted the sound settings, but the problem persists.

I am running iOS 27.0.1, and I am wondering whether this is a software bug introduced by the latest update or a problem with the way the phone detects the switch position.

I have seen older Apple Community discussions describing similar symptoms following updates a couple of years ago. Is anyone else experiencing this on iOS 27.0.1, particularly on an iPhone SE (3rd generation)?

Has anyone found a permanent solution, or is this something Apple needs to address in a future update?

Thanks for any suggestions.

My three SE's too. Switch the silent switch to Silent then back to Ring after turning the phone on as you discovered.

It is a bug. Report it https://apple.com/feedback

I suspect it is another home screen phone bug and it will only get fixed if we all report it.

Probably you may have set up Focus Mode:

Focus is a feature that helps you concentrate on a task by minimizing distractions. When you want to concentrate on a specific activity, you can customize one of the provided Focus options—for example Work, Personal, or Sleep—or create a custom Focus. You can use Focus to temporarily silence all notifications, or allow only specific notifications—ones that apply to your task, for example—and let other people and apps know you’re busy.

Tip: To quickly silence all notifications, open Control Center, tap Focus, then turn on Do Not Disturb.

You can also use the Reduce Interruptions Focus, which uses Apple Intelligence to show you only the most important notifications. See Use the Reduce Interruptions Focus.

Note: Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later is available on an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Apple Intelligence is not available in all languages or regions. Usage limits may apply.*

I am experiencing the exact same issue on my SE 3rd Edition so you are not alone - I must admit, I would have thought this kind of issue created by Apple would never happen. I wondered why I kept missing calls! I moved to Apple for reliablity now I'm not so sure! Can't even roll back so hope Apple get it sorted soon. I use the assistive touch to simplify a quick unmute under device once set up or flip the side switch off and on.

Not every issue an individual encounters on their device can be attributed to an iOS update. iOS 27 or later may have coincided with what you are experiencing, but that does not mean the issue was triggered by iOS. Coincidence in timing is not, by itself, evidence of causation.

If the update itself were the root cause, then every device running that same version of iOS would exhibit the identical problem. In such a scenario, the forums would be flooded with countless posts reporting the same malfunction, creating an unmistakable wave of complaints that no one could possibly overlook.

The absence of such widespread reports strongly indicates that the issue is not a general, system-wide problem with iOS 27 or later, but rather something specific to the individual device, its configuration, installed apps, settings, hardware, or another interacting factor.

In short: iOS 27 or later may be a coincidence in timing, but there is no basis to conclude that iOS itself triggered the problem simply because the issue appeared after the update.

See what each update does: About iOS 27 Updates, About iOS 26 Updates, About iOS 18 Updates, About iOS 17 Updates, About iOS 16 Updates, About iOS 15 Updates, About iOS 14 Updates, About iOS 13 Updates, About iOS 12 Updates, and so on...

The only problem for this case is not many people are using IPhone SE3s and they may not even realised it if they usually use in silent mode like I do. Like I have said, Report It https://apple.com/feedback

We home button iPhone owners can expect more bugs (this wasn't the first), and sloooow fixes unless we report the bugs https://apple.com/feedback

You know that

  1. you just flip the silent switch on (red) then off to reset it.
  2. Unless the phone is a spare there is absolutely no need to ever turn it off unless to fix a glitch. Charge all night.

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve checked Do Not Disturb and Focus, and the settings appear to be correct.

I’ve also checked the ringtone volume and system-sound settings. The problem I’ve experienced is that, after restarting my iPhone SE (3rd generation) running iOS 27.0.1, incoming calls don’t ring and the charging confirmation tone disappears, although the phone still vibrates.

Moving the physical Ring/Silent switch to Silent and back to ring mode restores the sounds. The switch clicks positively in both positions.

Interestingly, the phone has been ringing normally again since I restored the sound last night, so I’m going to monitor it rather than make further changes for now.

I appreciate that the timing doesn’t prove the latest update caused the problem. However, if anyone else has experienced these specific symptoms, particularly on an iPhone SE running iOS 27.0.1, it would be useful to hear from you. It may help establish whether this is an isolated issue or something others are experiencing too.
