Unable to set up AirTag found in car, linked to another Apple ID

Hello Apple Support,

I recently found an Apple AirTag in my car, which was given to me by the previous owner of the vehicle. They had told me that I could use it, but unfortunately, I no longer have any contact with them.

When I try to set up the AirTag with my iPhone, I receive a message saying that it is linked to a different Apple Account.

I have tried resetting the AirTag, but I understand that resetting it does not remove the existing Apple Account association.

Could you please guide me on whether there is any official way to resolve this issue? I am happy to provide the AirTag’s serial number and any available proof of ownership if required.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Correct, you cannot set up an AirTag that is linked to someone else's account. They would need to remove the AirTag from their account first before you could use it and since you do not have any contact with them, it is completely unusable to you. Apple cannot remove that account either.

I would recommend removing the battery, as the original owner is still able to track the AirTag when there is power available and another iPhone nearby to transmit its location. Beyond that recycle it.
