Is 90% battery health normal for iPhone 16 after 13 months?

My iPhone 16 single, which is one year old (activated in September 2025), and after 315 charge cycles, the battery reached 90% today.

Is this normal? It's my first year using an iPhone.

Exactly 13 months of use.

iPhone 16, iOS 27

It is normal for battery health to drop slightly, and the decline isn't always linear, it can remain steady for a while and then drop a point or two quickly.

At 315 charge cycles, a battery health of 90% is actually performing well within normal expectations.

Apple generally considers the battery healthy as long as it retains 80% of its capacity. You typically only need to consider contacting Apple Support or replacing the battery if the health drops below 80% or if you experience unexpected shutdowns or significant performance issues.

Understanding Battery Health

Lithium-ion batteries chemically age over time, which naturally reduces the amount of charge they can hold.

  • Non-Linear Degradation: It is common for battery health to stay at a certain percentage for months and then drop a couple of percent in a short period.
  • Charge Cycles: Apple designs its newer iPhone batteries to retain up to 80% of their capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. At 315 cycles, your battery is performing exactly as it should.
  • When to Seek Service: You generally do not need to worry about your battery unless its maximum capacity falls below 80% or if you see a "Service" warning in your Battery settings.

Tips to Maintain Battery Health

If you want to slow down battery degradation, consider these tips:

  • Avoid Extreme Heat: High temperatures are the biggest enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Try not to leave your phone in direct sunlight or a hot car.
  • Use Optimized Battery Charging: This feature helps reduce the wear on your battery by learning your daily charging routine and waiting to finish charging past 80% until you need it.
  • Avoid Heavy Use While Charging: Playing intensive games or streaming video while your phone is plugged in can generate excess heat, which accelerates battery wear.

The iPhone 16 was introduced by Apple in September, 2024, so perhaps it was sitting on a shelf for a while before you purchased it. The Manufacture Date is shown at Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

You’re not far from standard degradation, which is 1% every 50 cycles or so. Lots of variation is common.

Your battery won’t require service until the battery health falls below 80%.

Months are not very important as far as battery use. A heavy user might see a Battery Health setting of 88-90% after one year. A lighter user might still have 93-94% on the battery. Yet....both users have used their phones for a year. Which one is "normal"?

Charge Cycles are much more important than months.

Apple specifies that the battery in the iPhone 16 is designed to go up to 1,000 Charge Cycles before the battery declines to 80% Battery Health. That works out to about a 1% decline for every 50 Charge Cycles.

Your battery has completed 300 Charge Cycles. If "normal" is expected to be a loss of 1% for every 50 Charge Cycles, then your battery should have declined by 6% at this time to 94%.

Yet, you say that the Battery Health is at 90%, so you are using up the battery faster than normal in my opinion. 90% is not that bad, but your battery is going to decline to 80% long before the battery has completed 1,000 Charge Cycles.

At your current rate, your battery will be at 80% after only 600-700 Charge Cycles. You want it to be down to 80% after 1,000 Charge Cycles.

Two other users have told you that your battery performance is "normal". If you are happy with that, then that is great. Personally, I would not be happy at all with that kind of "normal".
