iPhone 18 Pro Spatial Video recording freezes when handheld

iPhone 18 Pro freezes and stops Spatial Video recording after 3-5 min when handheld (normal temperature)

iPhone 18 Pro, iOS 27.0.1. Spatial Video (1080p/30) recording freezes and stops on its own after roughly 3-5 minutes when recording handheld at live events (music shows, nightclub, moving with the crowd). The phone is at normal temperature - no overheating warning. The Camera app freezes mid-recording and the clip ends.

It is much harder to reproduce with the phone sitting still on a desk pointed at a static wall; there the recording runs considerably longer. The trigger seems to be handheld motion/moving subjects rather than heat or storage.

I recorded shows for years on an iPhone 17 Pro Max with the same Spatial Video workflow and never hit this. On the 18 Pro I can't get a clip longer than ~5 minutes at a show, which is the main thing I use the phone for.

Questions for the community and for Apple:

  1. Is anyone else seeing Spatial Video (or any video mode) freeze after a few minutes of handheld recording on an 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max?
  2. Is this specific to the 18 Pro or does the Pro Max behave the same? I'm deciding whether to swap to a Pro Max and don't want the same problem.
  3. Could this be related to the new variable-aperture main lens (iOS 27.0.1 already shipped a fix for a 2x/f1.48 photo artifact on this lens) or to the stereo capture pipeline?
  4. Can someone at Apple confirm whether this is a known iOS 27 issue and test Spatial Video handheld for 5+ minutes?

Happy to supply analytics logs, sample clips, and exact repro steps.

I would test the following before concluding that the iPhone 18 Pro has a hardware defect.

Test 1: Compare Spatial Video with ordinary video

Record Spatial Video handheld for 10 minutes, then record ordinary 1080p/30 video under similar lighting and movement. If only Spatial Video freezes, the stereo capture or processing pipeline becomes a stronger suspect.

Test 2: Separate phone movement from subject movement

Record a moving subject while the phone remains stationary, then move the phone while filming a static scene. This helps determine whether the trigger is scene movement, camera movement or something associated with the recording environment.

Test 3: Check available storage

Ensure substantial free storage is available and repeat the test. A recording that repeatedly terminates at approximately the same duration deserves investigation even when storage is not nearly full.

Test 4: Preserve diagnostic evidence

Note the exact time of each freeze, whether the Camera app becomes unresponsive, whether the phone restarts, and whether the resulting clip remains playable. Ask Apple Support to examine the relevant analytics and crash logs.

Apple documents Spatial Video as 1080p at 30 fps, using the iPhone's Wide and Ultra Wide cameras to capture the two views.
