iOS 27 causes iPad to freeze when connecting external monitor

After upgrading to iOS 27, my iPad Pro (12.9” 5th gen, 512 GB) is consistently crashing whenever I plug it into my external display (LG 27UD88) via direct USB-C connection. I’m currently running 27.0.1 and everything was working just fine prior to upgrading. I get a black screen with the “waiting” circular progress bar icon in the middle, but the icon is frozen and not animated. I have always had to do a full reboot of the iPad, which does fix things until I plug it into the monitor again.

Is anyone seeing anything similar? I did some searching and didn’t see anyone posting about similar iOS 27 issues.

Yours is the first report that I have seen here. Speaking of personal experience, I have not encountered difficulties with using a fifth generation iPad Pro M1 with iPadOS 27.0.1 when connected to an external monitor - but that said, I do not have an LG 27UD88 monitor.

As a diagnostic exercise, you would be well advised to test your iPad with a different monitor - as this will help to establish the source of the problem. If you don't have immediate access to another monitor, consider visiting a local computer retailer - and ask to "demo" their compatible monitors with your iPad.

If the iPad works with other monitors, then your iPad is working normally. By contrast, if the problem persists, you have demonstrated that there is a potential problem with your iPad that would benefit from further investigation by Apple.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

I have good news! Updated my iPad to 27.2 and all is well. LG monitor is running great again on either Screen Mirroring or Extended Display. Whatever bug was present in the previous version of the OS has now been fixed.

Excellent. Hopefully others that encounter the issue, searching for help, will also update to iPadOS 27.2.

This latest version resolves a number of functional issues. Unfortunately, Apple's release notes rarely document the included fixes.

LotusPilot, thanks for your response. We now have 3 different people reporting the same issue in 3 different setups. My iPad initially seemed fine with the ASUS monitor, but this did not last. Interestingly, the iPad screen went black and froze with the “waiting” symbol just like before, but the external monitor continued to work fine and I could continue to use the iPad on the external monitor.
The others are reporting the same experience as mine, where their setup was working just fine prior to updating the OS, so it seems pretty clear that the software update introduced a bug.

You and anyone else experiencing this issue should consider submitting a Bug Report to Apple via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting a Bug Report, please ensure that you include details of your iPad model and installed version of iPadOS within the body-text of your report along with details of the problem.  Do not rely upon the pick-list alone - as this rarely includes the current version of iPadOS.

Every Bug Report counts. Unless reports are submitted (with adequate detail), Apple may not assign resources to investigate and correct the issue.

Same exact issue I have.

Same version of iOS, same iPad Pro model and generation.

I'm attempting an MSI monitor but have the same symptoms.

my iPhone 17 pro connects to the monitor no issue, same cable.

I was going through some diagnostics with ChatGPT, error logs etc but I’m not really getting anywhere.

im guessing it must be a bug specific to this version of iPadOS

Thank you, Ben! It’s nice to see confirmation from another person that they are having the same issue.

Interestingly, I tried plugging in the iPad to an older ASUS monitor and there is no problem. The monitor resolution is lower, so that might be important if the crash is due to some kind of memory overload. Another difference is that I am using a Satechi adapter to convert from USB-C to standard HDMI, as the ASUS monitor does not have a direct USB-C interface.

*Update*

Yesterday, I plugged my iPad in to my monitor using the same cable as before.

To my shock (and somewhat annoyance) it worked!

External display kicked in and worked exactly as it should.

Somewhat irritating because I tried it so many times before with it not working, and ultimately I did nothing differently.

I’m still on the iPadOS version, same cable, same monitor.

the only thing that *might* be different is the way round the cable was plugged in.

i know with usb-c / Thunderbolt3/4 that shouldn’t make a difference, but I had read somewhere that it might make a difference.

I’m confused as to why it is now working but happy that it is
