QuickTime Player fails to record microphone and movies on Mac

Quicktime Player won't record from Mac Microphone.

'the operation could not be completed'.

It works on an older Mac that I have. I have ensured the player has full disk access. As it's an inbuilt app, it clearly doesn't feature on the Privacy permissions. IOS 27.0.1 new MacAir.

Won't record movie either, but does seem to Screen Record.

if there is no workaround, are there any reliable safe recording apps?
