Intel-based app support ending - how do I keep using my Brother scanner?

How do I update (as advised in a pop up message on my iMac) to an Apple Silicon version to support my Brother printer/scanner? I keep getting the message that support is ending for Intel-based apps and that my version of the Brother Scanner will not open in a future release of MacOS. I am just going in circles. Yep, I'm a bit slow ....my excuse is that I'm a baby boomer ;) Support from Brother wasn't working - my Brother printer model is MFC-7362N and works perfectly well for home use so am loathe to chuck it and buy another printer. Grateful for any hints.

MacBook Air 15″, macOS 26.5

I looked on Brother's support site, but didn't find much.

Brother – Support & Downloads – MFC-7362N

There are no downloads for macOS. This implies that either (a) there never were any Mac downloads, or (b) the ones that Brother removed were so old as to be useless. (The printer's specifications mention Mac OS X 10.4.11, Mac OS X 10.5.x, and Mac OS X 10.6.x.)

I found no indication that the MFC-7362N supports AirPrint, either on Brother's site, or on Apple's.

So there's the issue of how to get printing working without relying on Intel-only software.

If you can do that there seem to be three options for scanning:

  • You could try using the built-in Image Capture application. If you were lucky, your MFC-7362N might show up in the Devices list or the Shared list, allowing you to do scans from within Image Capture.
  • You could try downloading Brother iPrint&Scan from the App Store. (See Brother – macOS 14 Sonoma – Support, which may or may not pertain to your MFC-7362N.). I don't know whether this app is Apple-Silicon-native.
  • You could look into getting the commercial scanner application VueScan (Hamrick Software - VueScan – Brother MFC-7362N). That's what I used to keep the scanner part of an old Canon all-in-one printer going, after moving from an Intel-based Mac running High Sierra to an Apple-Silicon-based Mac.

You really need to contact Brother support for this.

There's this Git page - but you'd have to do a bit of work to see if it suits your printer and then learn how to do the installs.

There's always a chance that the bog standard Apple drivers will work to some extent with your printer. Again, the Brother support or forums would be your best bet. I couldn't find any Brother-hosted sites but this one popped up in a DDG search and it might be worth asking your question here.

Otherwise - hang on for someone else here who might have a better answer.
