What am I doing wrong?

My sequence settings are HD 1440 x 1080 (16:9) and the compressor used is HDV 1080i50.

I am importing a jpeg image that was re-sized in photoshop to 1440 x 1080 but when viewed in the FCP timeline or after export in QT, it is stretched. The item properties say both the frame size and pixel aspect are still 1440 x 1080.

Any ideas how I can correct this?

The pixel aspect ratios are different. Make the graphic in 1920x1080, assuming it's flatten and not a layered Photoshop sequence.

It's now not squashed but there are black lines down the side?

Double-click the image to bring it to the Viewer, then in the Motion tab, re-set the Distort parameter by double click on the little red cross.
