iPhone 17 Pro Max not detecting lavalier microphone

My iPhone 17 Pro Max has stopped detecting the lavalier microphone. It records sound through its own microphone. The lavalier microphone also doesn’t appear in the sound settings. However, the lavalier microphone works on other iPhones. The problem is with my iPhone. What to do?

Hi there

  • Inspect and Clean the USB-C Port: Dust, lint, or debris in the iPhone 17 Pro Max USB-C port can block data and audio pins. Carefully clean the port using a soft, non-metallic brush or dry toothpick (avoid metal tools). [1]
  • Check App Audio Support: The default iOS Camera app does not always support external microphones. Test the lavalier microphone in a third-party recording app that allows manual audio source selection (such as Blackmagic Camera or Filmic Pro).
  • Reset USB Audio Accessories: If the iPhone is misinterpreting the microphone or adapter, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > USB Audio Accessories and select "Forget All USB Audio Accessories," then reconnect the mic.
  • Check Wired Accessory Permissions: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Wired Accessoriesand make sure it is set to "Always Allow".
  • Force Restart Your iPhone: Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

As a senior contributor here, you really should be careful when re-posting material that you glean from Google or other AI sources - as they frequently contain errors and inaccurate information.

By example, the USB-C port has no audio connection pins. The interface is digital; for microphone input, or audio output, either a USB-C adapter with a built-in ADC/DAC is required, or the connected accessory must itself incorporate the appropriate electronics.

If you do post material from AI aggregators, it's also a good idea to provide attribution to the source.
