AirTag found in car is linked to another Apple ID

Dear Apple Support Team,

I recently purchased a vehicle from the United States and discovered an AirTag inside the car.

I attempted to connect the AirTag to my iPhone, but I was unable to do so because it is linked to another Apple Account.

I do not know who the current owner is. I would appreciate your guidance on whether Apple can notify the previous owner and ask them to remove the AirTag from their Apple Account so that I can pair it with my own account.

I understand that Apple has privacy and security policies, and I am not requesting any personal information about the current owner.

I can provide the AirTag’s serial number and proof of vehicle purchase if necessary.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

This is serial number ***

An Apple AirTag that has been activated and associated with an Apple Account cannot be reset and used by another User - unless the original owner resets the Tag and removed it from their Apple Account. You cannot circumvent this process.

Apple will not assist with tracing the owner of an AirTag or other device - as to do so Apple would transgress privacy legislation and laws that govern its operations in many countries and regions in which it has presence.

Unless you can independently identify the owner of the tag, it is and will remain useless to you. Return the tag to an Apple retail store where it can be responsibly recycled. Consider that the actual owner of the tag may see the location of the Tag - and as you are not the owner of the item, might be reported for handling stolen goods.

1) This is a user to user forum. Apple is not here.

2) Apple does not assist in reuniting lost items with their owners other than providing the Find My service. Use Find My to locate your lost Apple device or AirTag - Apple Support

Frankly, Airtags are not all that expensive so the owner might not even be bothering with it. For personal privacy reasons I would remove the battery and if you cannot get it working for your own use then recycle it.

Additional

If the AirTag was concealed in the car, it may have been intentionally placed there by the vehicle owner - in case of vehicle theft.

While an AirTag is intended to help location of a lost or misplaced item to which it may be attached - and is not intended to be used as a vehicle tracker - AirTags are frequently and inadvisably secreted within valuable items as an antitheft measure.

It is not uncommon for previously-owned vehicles, imported from other countries, to have been stolen and resold. In such circumstances, the AirTag can be used by the owner to lead the authorities directly to your door...
