Old attachments not loading in Messages app on iPhone 13

In the messages app, old attachments, such as photos, videos and audio messages won’t load anymore, only showing file placeholder icons when I try to open any of them. It seems to be quite random to which files this happens; some of them can only be found back in the chat conversation, some will show up in the chat’s photos tab (but not load when I click them) and some are unaffected. This means there’s a lot of information that was sent to me about 2 months ago that I can no longer view.

I tried toggling iMessage off and on in the settings and restarting my iPhone, but it didn’t work.

I don’t have the option turned on where iMessage attachments are saved to iCloud.

I have used about 150 GB out of 256 of storage, I’m not sure how much influence this has.

I’m using a refurbished iPhone 13 with iOS 26.6.2.
