Speak Screen not reading text on iPhone

I turned on Read and Speak. I turned on Speak Screen. When I press playback the little controller, it reads the name of the book and the page number. Then it asks if I want to read from here. I don’t see an option to select that, so I say Seri, read from here. It repeats the same information and stops. How do I get my phone to read the text on the page?
