Original Apple ID replaced and unauthorized charges despite parental controls

To Apple Customer Relations and Executive Customer Support,

I am writing to formally express my deep disappointment and frustration with the way Apple has handled my account, disputed charges, and requests for assistance.

I have been a loyal Apple customer for approximately 17 years, and I am also an Apple investor. I have trusted Apple's products, services, account security, and parental protection features for many years. Unfortunately, my recent experience has seriously damaged that trust.

My son is only 8 years old. I had parental approval settings in place, including the expectation that purchases or charges would require my approval. Despite these safeguards, approximately $300 in charges associated with TikTok went through. When I sought a refund, Apple declined to credit the charges. I am extremely concerned about how these charges were permitted despite the parental controls I believed were protecting my family.

What has made this situation even more distressing is the handling of my original Apple ID. After approximately 17 years of using the same account and associated email, I found myself having to create a new Apple ID. This has forced me to go through the exhausting process of downloading applications again, setting up accounts, and trying to restore the digital life I had built over many years.

My original Apple ID was not a disposable account. It was tied to years of purchases, applications, account access, personal history, and services. Being forced to start over has caused significant inconvenience, frustration, and emotional distress. I do not understand why this happened or why a satisfactory solution was not offered before I had to create a new account.

I am a disabled veteran who lives with anxiety. The unnecessary complications, repeated setup work, financial concerns, and lack of a satisfactory resolution have added substantial stress. I should not have to navigate this level of difficulty after being a loyal customer for nearly two decades.

I recognize that Apple has policies and procedures, but I am asking for a meaningful individual review of my circumstances rather than another generic response or an automatic denial. I believe a company with Apple's resources should be able to investigate what occurred, explain the failure of the safeguards I relied upon, and work with me toward a reasonable solution.

I respectfully request the following actions:

  1. Restore my original Apple ID and associated email access, if possible, and explain clearly why I had to create a new Apple ID in the first place.
  2. Escalate and reconsider the approximately $300 in disputed TikTok-related charges, including a review of the parental approval settings in place at the time and the circumstances under which the charges were processed.
  3. Investigate the parental approval safeguards and explain why the charges went through despite my understanding that approval was required.
  4. Help recover my previous purchases, applications, and account access to the fullest extent possible, without requiring me to unnecessarily repeat the work of rebuilding my digital accounts.
  5. Provide a written explanation and a clear resolution plan, including the specific steps Apple can take to address these problems.
  6. Have a senior customer relations representative or appropriate escalation team review this complaint and contact me regarding the available solutions.

I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for fairness, accountability, and a reasonable resolution to a problem that has caused financial loss, considerable inconvenience, and unnecessary emotional distress.

After 17 years of loyalty and investment in Apple's ecosystem, I find it unacceptable to feel that my concerns have not been adequately addressed. I would prefer to resolve this matter directly and constructively with Apple, but I need someone with the authority to review the full situation and provide a meaningful response.

Please treat this as a formal complaint and escalation request. I ask that Apple review the circumstances, respond in writing, and explain what steps can be taken to restore my original account, reconsider the charges, and prevent a similar situation from happening again.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to a substantive response and a fair resolution.

Sincerely,

A long-standing Apple customer and investor

There is no email support for contact, you would have to contact Apple using the provided link and ask for escalation to a Senior Advisor.

No, simply adding a person to Family Sharing does not enable restrictions for purchases. You have to enable those whether you choose the Ask to Buy option, require a Password for purchases that is unknown by the child, enable restrictions for in-app purchases, or disable the App Store entirely where it would not even appear on the child's device for any app purchases.

Set up parental controls to manage your child's iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

The exact options you would use depend on if you are managing the Screen Time Restrictions on your device that you let your child use, or the child has their own phone and is in your Family Sharing plan using a unique Apple Account for them. We would not be able to tell you how those charges were permitted without knowing your setup and what options you have actually used to prevent the purchases. If you need help with that setup, users here could provide assistance, but we are not able to review your account or make any changes that would result in those charges being removed on your previous account.

Creating a new Apple Account is simply to avoid the amount that you owe on your previous Apple Account and yes, that means any data relating to purchases with the previous account will be lost. That previous account will remain disabled for any further use of the App Store until the amount you owe is paid, although phone calls, messages, emails, etc, are not affected.
