Depth Effect broken on Apple’s stock wallpapers

The Depth Effect stopped working on several of Apple’s stock wallpapers with the public release of iOS 27.

I’ve personally noticed this with the original iOS 17 wallpaper, but I’ve seen others report the same issue.

The feature worked correctly in the iOS 27 betas, but after the public release, the depth effect disappeared, and the option to enable it was no longer available when editing the affected wallpapers.

Updating to iOS 27.2 did not resolve the issue. The problem appears to affect multiple stock wallpapers, not just one specific wallpaper.

You had to be using iOS 17 when the wallpaper was available and set it as your wallpaper back then. One way to verify that you have the original system wallpaper is to unlock your phone, press and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper selection menu, and check the label above the wallpaper. It should say “Collections” rather than “Photo”, which would indicate that it was set from your photo library.

I should clarify that this is specifically about one of the older stock wallpapers from the Collections tab. Not any image taken off the internet or a screenshot. This is Apple's own default iOS 17 wallpaper. The Depth Effect used to work with this exact wallpaper.

I actually tested this on my older phone (iPhone 13 Pro) because I have the same original iOS wallpaper there. On iOS 26.7, the wallpaper worked normally and the Depth Effect was available as an option. After updating that same iPhone to iOS 27.0, the Depth Effect option completely disappeared for that wallpaper.

There’s also an important distinction here: this isn’t simply a matter of downloading a picture of the wallpaper from the internet and setting it as a background. This was an iOS 17 wallpaper from the Collections tab with its own behavior, including the small animation when unlocking/opening the phone and the Depth Effect. As far as I understand it, these older system wallpapers were only available through the relevant iOS version and don’t necessarily behave the same way if you just use a copy of the image.

So this isn’t an issue with an imported image or a lack of depth information in a photo. It’s the same stock iOS wallpaper, and the behavior changed immediately after updating from iOS 26.7 to iOS 27.0.

I’ve also seen other people experiencing the same problem with different older stock wallpapers. For example, there’s this Reddit post from someone reporting the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/iOS27/comments/1wr0k83/no_depth_effect_on_default_wallpaper/

In the comments you can clearly see the exact blue and red wallpaper i'm talking about, and two people agreeing that there's an issue.

If you have the original iOS 17 stock wallpaper from the Collections tab, could you check whether the Depth Effect option is still available for it on your device?

Not every issue an individual encounters on their device can be attributed to an iOS update. iOS 27 or later may have coincided with what you are experiencing, but that does not mean the issue was triggered by iOS. Coincidence in timing is not, by itself, evidence of causation.

If the update itself were the root cause, then every device running that same version of iOS would exhibit the identical problem. In such a scenario, the forums would be flooded with countless posts reporting the same malfunction, creating an unmistakable wave of complaints that no one could possibly overlook.

The absence of such widespread reports strongly indicates that the issue is not a general, system-wide problem with iOS 27 or later, but rather something specific to the individual device, its configuration, installed apps, settings, hardware, or another interacting factor.

In short: iOS 27 or later may be a coincidence in timing, but there is no basis to conclude that iOS itself triggered the problem simply because the issue appeared after the update.

If the photos on your iPhone were not captured using an iPhone camera and were instead imported from a Mac or PC, the Spatial Scene or 3D depth effect may not be available for those images. This depends on the photo's format, available depth information, and whether iOS can process the image to create the effect. However, the absence of depth information does not necessarily prevent you from using the photo as wallpaper.

The Clock Depth Effect is a separate feature that allows the subject of a photo to appear in front of the clock on the Lock Screen, provided the image and wallpaper layout support it.

As you can see in the attached picture, running iOS 27.0.1, the Clock Depth Effect is working correctly. This demonstrates that the effect can be applied to a suitable photo, even when other spatial or depth-related features may not be available.
