MacOS Golden Gate 27.2 update fails on my MacBook Pro M5 Pro

MacOS Golden Gate 27.2 update is not working on my MacBook Pro M5 Pro

I am on 27.0.1

Tried to install the update through software update 3 times - the process would proceed normally, then it would reboot, then put me back on 27.0.1 without error messages or explanations

The Mac remains on 27.0.1 after five failed 27.2 (26B123) install attempts, each stalling at shutdown and rolling back.

The update engine log reveals the reboot ran in "fail forward" cleanup mode, finished in just 27 seconds, and reported "Failed Backward - in original OS after update was attempted."

Specific errors in the logs are "Failed to personalize the software update"

Has anyone seen this? What could be the cause?

Resolved it

Turn off lockdown mode

Run the update normally from system preferences

iOS 27.2 installs correctly

Turn lockdown mode back on

This is a bug in MacOS 27.x... when lockdown mode is enabled, updates fail - could be because it doesn't auto-connect to WiFi in lockdown mode, on most Wifi networks. One of the worst features of lockdown mode anyway.

Yes it is the root cause

I got the tip from an X (Twitter) user who noted the same issue for the various 27.2 beta releases - same thing, had to disable lockdown mode before updating

Prior to MacOS 27.2, updating while in lockdown mode was working just fine

Could be they shot themselves in the foot with the "not auto-connecting to WifI" problem in lockdown mode... but that's speculation. In the end, Apple will fix it, whatever it was.

Troubleshooting macOS 27.2 Update Failures on MacBook Pro M5 Pro

Your 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro is running macOS 27.0.1. Five attempts to install macOS 27.2 (build 26B123) have failed. Each time, the Mac restarts and returns to 27.0.1 without displaying an error.

The key log message is:

Failed to personalize the software update

The logs also report:

Failed Backward - in original OS after update was attempted

The rollback cleanup takes approximately 27 seconds.

These messages indicate that the update failed and macOS reverted to the previous working system. The personalization error is the main diagnostic clue, but the precise cause remains unknown.

1. Check the basics

Before another attempt:

  • Verify that you have a current backup.
  • Check System Settings > General > Storage. Aim for 30–40 GB of free space if possible.
  • Connect the Mac to power and ensure it starts normally.

2. Rule out network interference

Personalization may require communication with Apple's services. VPNs, proxies, DNS filters and security software can sometimes interfere.

  1. Disconnect any VPN temporarily.
  2. Use a reliable network, trying another trusted connection if available.
  3. Check whether third-party network filtering could be blocking Apple's update services.
  4. Restart the Mac and try the update once more.

If it fails again, move on rather than repeating the same process.

3. Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode helps determine whether third-party software is interfering with installation.

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Hold the power button until startup options appear.
  3. Select your startup disk.
  4. Hold Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode.
  5. Open System Settings > General > Software Update and retry the update.

If it succeeds, investigate third-party security tools or startup software. If the personalisation error persists, proceed to Recovery.

4. Run First Aid and try macOS Recovery

Check the disk

  1. Shut down the Mac and hold the power button until startup options appear.
  2. Select Options > Continue.
  3. Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices.
  4. Run First Aid on the relevant volumes and containers, following the displayed hierarchy.

Do not erase or reformat the disk. If First Aid cannot repair reported errors, stop and seek advice.

Reinstall macOS

From the Recovery utilities window, select Reinstall macOS and follow the instructions, choosing the existing Macintosh HD system volume.

A Recovery reinstall is designed to preserve files and applications, but a backup is essential. It may reinstall 27.0.1 rather than 27.2. If so, check Software Update again afterward.

5. Escalate to Apple Support

If Safe Mode, First Aid and Recovery do not resolve the problem, contact Apple Support and provide:

  • Model: 16-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Pro
  • Current version: macOS 27.0.1
  • Target version: macOS 27.2, build 26B123
  • Attempts: Five unsuccessful installations
  • Errors: Failed to personalize the software update and Failed Backward - in original OS after update was attempted

Ask Apple to investigate the personalisation and installation logs.

If necessary, Apple may recommend an Apple silicon firmware reviv, which is designed to repair firmware without erasing the Mac. A firmware restore erases the device and should not be the first step.

Do not erase the disk or change startup security settings based solely on the current logs.

Apple's official guidance: If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS.

Recommended approach

Given the five identical failures, I would stop repeating the standard Software Update process. Verify the basics, try Safe Mode once, then move to First Aid and Recovery. If personalization still fails, collect the relevant logs and contact Apple Support.

The key question is why personalization fails. Identifying the earliest error before the rollback is more likely to reveal the cause than another routine installation attempt.

As a final last ditch effort use the Terminal Command to  see if the computer can see Golden Gate 27.2

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

Finding available software

Software Update found the following full installers:

* Title: macOS 27 Golden Gate, Version: 27.2, Size: 17389792KiB, Build: 26B123

Then this command to download the Full Version

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 27.2

I own a M6 Mac Mini, a M5 Macbook Air and a M5 Macbook Pro and i have encountered this problem on all 3 of my machines. I have tried to do the update on my Mac Mini 4 times without success and tried on my Macbook Air 3 times and each failed. Like you, the mac would download the software , start the install process and the progress bar would proceed and then my MAc would reboot and return back to its orginal state withough any messages or info on why the install failed.

Most of the apps on my Mac are stock Apple that came with the device with the exception of Adobe Photoshop,Lightroom and google Chrome. There is nothing else installed on my Macs. Each machine has 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD and each has nearly 900GB of free space. Tried everything to get the install to proceed and the only way it would work was to boot into safe mode and do it that way.

It is important to note that in each case the installation downloads fine, although it is bloody annoying that in each case it downloads the whole 19GB file each and every time. It is during the installation process that it fails and without a message on why the install failed. How do you check the install log?

I contacted several friends and they also had the same problem while for others the install proceeds. In once case, my friend has NO third party software installed and only use apps that came installed on the machine and his install failed 3 times after proceeding with the install progress bar.

My wife has a Neo and I will see what happens with her machine later today when I attempt the update.

Hopefully this install issue can be resolved.

That's very interesting - good news really. If this happens to a lot of people, Apple will have a fix for it.

Meaning I will wait

I tried everything the AI suggested, including the above AI response, and including "Revive" via DFU mode- don't bother because that will waste another 2 hours of your time and also doesn't work. (requires 2 macs and also downloads the entire thing again)

Lockdown Mode probably was not the root cause of the macOS 27.2 update failure

The fact that macOS 27.2 installed successfully after Lockdown Mode was disabled is significant, but it does not , by itself, prove that Lockdown Mode was the root cause.

Apple's Lockdown Mode documentation describes specific restrictions, including:

  • Wireless connectivity: Devices won't automatically join non-secure Wi-Fi networks and will disconnect from a non-secure Wi-Fi network when Lockdown Mode is enabled.

  • Cellular connectivity: 2G and 3G support is disabled on iPhone and iPad.

Apple also documents restrictions involving device connections and configuration profiles. However, it does not identify macOS software-update personalization as a restricted function or Lockdown Mode as a known cause of update failures.

In this case, the key clue is the error “Failed to personalize the software update,” which Apple addresses in its macOS installation troubleshooting guide.

The update repeatedly failed and rolled back to macOS 27.0.1, even after attempts using Safe Mode, Recovery, and DFU Revive.

Apple's troubleshooting guidance explains that personalization errors can have several causes, including temporary issues. It recommends checking the internet connection, installing from macOS Recovery, repairing the startup disk, and, in rare cases, reviving or restoring firmware. None of these recommendations identifies Lockdown Mode as the cause.

The error points to a failed update process, but it does not establish exactly where or why the failure occurred.

Could Lockdown Mode have contributed indirectly?

Possibly. Its documented restrictions affect certain connectivity and system features, so an indirect interaction cannot be ruled out. However, there is no evidence here demonstrating such a mechanism. It's also possible that disabling Lockdown Mode coincided with a successful retry.

The bottom line: Disabling Lockdown Mode was a successful workaround, but calling it the root cause is premature. Apple's published documentation does not establish a link between Lockdown Mode and macOS update-personalization failures. The successful retry is evidence of an association, not proof of causation, and the underlying reason remains unconfirmed.

Re-enabling Lockdown Mode after the update is reasonable if you rely on its security protections.
