iPad iMessages says 46 messages backed up in iCloud, but does not show an option to let me see them. to deleted unwanted ones
My iPad is synched to my iPhone, both of which had the latest ios updated today. The iPhone gives the same info.

No it isn't backed up to the cloud, you have this enabled Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support . Message are viewed directly on your ipad not the cloud.

I have deleted old messages from my iPad/ iPhone, but cannot work out how to get rid of the 46 that it indicates are dat in iCloud.
iPad iMessages backed up in iCloud cannot be viewed or deleted.
