MacBook Air: Focus / Do Not Disturb Won’t Turn Off

If Focus or Do Not Disturb has turned on by itself on your MacBook Air (2018–2020), it may be due to an automatic schedule or Focus settings being shared with your iPhone or another Apple device.

If you are only seeing options for time and devices, you are probably looking at the settings that control when Focus activates, rather than the menu used to turn it off.

A Turn Focus off

  1. Click the Control Center icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Click Focus.
  3. Select the active Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, to turn it off. Its icon should no longer be highlighted.

Apple’s instructions: Turn a Focus on or off on Mac.

B Stop Focus from turning on automatically

  1. Click the Apple menu () and open System Settings. On older macOS versions, this may be called System Preferences.
  2. Select Focus, then choose Do Not Disturb.
  3. Look under Set a Schedule for any time, location, or app-based rules you do not want.
  4. Open each active rule and disable its Schedule or Automation option, where available.

Apple’s instructions: Set up a Focus on Mac.

C Check whether your other Apple devices are enabling Focus

If Focus keeps turning back on, your iPhone or iPad may be sharing its Focus settings with your Mac.

On your Mac, go to System Settings >> Focus and turn off Share across devices if you do not want Focus settings synchronized between your Apple devices.

Apple’s instructions: Manage Focus options on Mac.

Sometimes Do Not Disturb turns on when you have another device using the same Apple ID on the network that is on Do Not Disturb. If you leave that other device on Focus (Do Not Disturb), it transmits that setting to the other devices on that Apple ID.
