Formal Complaint – Unauthorised Monthly Charges of £9.99 via Vodafone

Dear Apple Support Team,

I am writing to raise a formal complaint regarding recurring charges of £9.99 per month, which have been added to my Vodafone mobile phone bill for over a year.

The charges appear under the following description:

Apple *** – apple.com/bill

I would like to make it clear that I have not knowingly subscribed to any paid Apple services, nor have I used or authorised any paid services that would justify these charges.

I have carefully checked my Apple account but have been unable to identify any active subscriptions or purchases corresponding to these payments.

I have also contacted Vodafone, but they advised me that the charges originate from Apple and that Vodafone merely processes the payments.

I would therefore appreciate it if you could:

  1. Investigate these recurring charges and identify the exact service or subscription involved.
  2. Confirm when and how the subscription or payment arrangement was activated and authorised.
  3. Explain why £9.99 has been charged every month for over a year.
  4. Cancel any associated paid subscriptions and prevent further charges.
  5. Arrange a refund of all payments collected without my authorisation.

I consider this matter serious, particularly as these charges have continued for more than a year without my knowledge or consent.

I would appreciate a thorough investigation and a written response explaining your findings and the steps taken to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your prompt response.

Kind regards,

***

Sorry, you are not speaking to Apple here and a formal complaint will not be read or responded to on this Community forum where Apple does not participate in providing support. If you would like to contact Apple directly, you may be able to do that at the link below.

As for seeing a transaction from Apple that you do not recognize there are usually just 4 reasons where that is the case and detailed in this user tip.

Billed, but you didn’t buy? - Apple Community

Some further suggestions are here:

  • If you are using Family Sharing along with Purchase Sharing, then that allows members to make purchases using your payment method. You can still view those in your Purchase History, but you have to view their account on that plan.
  • If you are sharing your Apple Account with someone else, they have been authorized to use it and that would include for purchases. It would not be possible for anyone else to use your account without your credentials and if using Two Factor Authentication that code sent to your device or Trusted Phone Number. You can check if there is another device capable of making purchases by going to Settings > [name on top], and scroll to the bottom. The device list there are showing where your account is being used.
  • Another case is that your Vodafone account has been compromised and even though the charges originate from Apple, it is Vodafone's responsibility to secure your account and refund your money if a compromise had occurred. If they are processing the charge, then can also prevent it. Cancelling Vodafone is one way, but I would suspect they don't want you to do that.

Hello,

This is a user to user forum, you are not addressing Apple support here.

Subscriptions charged by Apple require biometric authentication and confirmation, so it's highly, highly unlikely they happened without your authorization.

What usually happens is when you download an app with a free trial, or access a free trial for an Apple service and you don't cancel it before it is set to renew. Then it will automatically renew and continue to charge you until you actually cancel it.

Another usual cause for this, is if you are the Family Organizer in a family sharing group and another member in the group starts a subscription. It will be charged to you, the Family Organizer, but only appear on the family member's account.

To find out what the charges for specifically. log into https://reportaproblem.apple.com.

Do you see Vodafone in your Apple subscriptions?

Settings > your name at the top > Subscriptions

If Vodafone is listed, cancel the app there.

If it is not listed, then you are being charged outside of Apple's control and need to cancel it per Vodafone's instructions.

For the UK:

For Australia:

Not sure where other regions are. I only did a quick search for cancelling, and these are the two that came up.
