How do I unlock a locked MacBook Air with a non-working password?

I am a PC Windows gal moving to Apple Mac Air (refurbished), 2022 M2. I setup, chose finger print and moved files and email (Google) over to the laptop. Went use the next day, it asked for Password and it says the laptop is locked and to try and sign in again in 5 mins. The password does not work, there is not a “forgot password” button. I can get into my iCloud w/o any issues using my Password. Help!!

Troubleshooting a Locked Mac Account:

Reset this Using the Login Screen:

You'd go through your Apple ID to perform this. Find out more here: If you Forgot your Mac Login Password - Apple Support. Make sure that caps lock is not enabled when typing it. No Success? Go here: If you can’t Reset your Login Password - Apple Support

And just for a bit of clarity since you are a new user. The Login Password to your computer is completely different than the Apple Account password used for accessing information on your account, such as iCloud. You cannot create Touch ID without first setting a Login Password on the Mac, so that is the one it is asking for. The Touch ID is just a convenience and not a replacement for the Login Password and you will still be required to enter the login password at times, for example whenever you restart the computer.

Remember the Login Password gives you access to a Mac and the Apple Account Password gives you access to your account. You could have several devices signed into the same Apple Account and each device could be using a completely different Login. For example a Mac and iPhone can use the same Apple Account/Password, but the Mac will have a Login Password and the iPhone will have a Passcode to open the device.
