How to Update Your MacBook Air Software

Before you start, it helps to understand the difference between an update and an upgrade.

  • Update: Installs a newer release of your current macOS, usually to improve security, fix bugs, or improve performance. For example, macOS Sequoia 15.7 to a later Sequoia 15.x release.

  • Upgrade: Moves your Mac to a newer major version of macOS, such as from macOS Sonoma 14 to macOS Sequoia 15.

For Apple's full instructions, see How to download and install macOS.

1. Check your current macOS version

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. Note your MacBook Air's model year and current macOS version.

If you need help identifying your model, see Identify your MacBook Air model.

2. Check for available updates or upgrades

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Select General, then Software Update.
  3. Wait while your Mac checks for available software.

Choose the option that matches your goal

  • To update your current macOS: Install the latest available update for the version you're using.
  • To upgrade to macOS Sequoia 15: Look for the Sequoia upgrade option, if your Mac supports it.

Button labels may vary by macOS version. Check the version you will be installing before proceeding.

See Apple's guide: Update macOS on Mac.

4. Before installing

  • Connect your MacBook Air to its charger.
  • Make sure you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
  • Back up important files, preferably using Time Machine.

Follow the on-screen instructions and allow your Mac to restart if required.

Troubleshooting: If something goes wrong

Sequoia isn't listed: Check whether your MacBook Air is compatible using Apple's macOS Sequoia compatibility list. Software Update normally displays only software compatible with your Mac.

The download or installation fails: Check your internet connection and available storage, then follow Apple's troubleshooting steps for macOS installation errors.

Still need help? Visit Apple Support for further assistance.

Final tip: If your goal is specifically to install macOS Sequoia 15, first confirm your MacBook Air's model year and current macOS version. That will help you determine whether Sequoia is compatible and which installation steps to follow.

Which MacBook Air do you have?

Apple has released 28 models to date, including the first one, introduced in January 2008.

The original MacBook Air can't run anything later than the extremely obsolete Mac OS X 10.7.* (Lion).

All of the M1 – M5 MacBook Airs can run the latest version of macOS - macOS 27 (Golden Gate).

For the remaining Intel-based models, the "end of the line" is somewhere in-between. We need to know which specific MacBook Air you have to pinpoint things more exactly.
