Title: iPhone 3GS (iOS 6.1.6) activation failure in 2026 – Error 11556

Hello Apple Community,

I own an original 32 GB iPhone 3GS from 2009, running iOS 6.1.6 (build 10B500). It was carefully stored for over 15 years and is still in excellent working condition.

After erasing all content and settings to restore factory defaults, I can no longer activate it.

I have already tried:

  • Activation over Wi-Fi.
  • An old Proximus SIM card.
  • An active Proximus SIM from a working iPhone 4S.
  • An active Telenet SIM from another working phone.
  • Activation through macOS Finder, which returns error 11556.

The iPhone is recognised by my MacBook and iMazing. Console logs show ActivationState: Unactivated, SIMStatus: OperatorLocked, and SecTrustEvaluate messages.

Has anyone successfully activated an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.6 recently? Is there an official solution for this activation failure?

I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

iPhone XS Max, iOS 18

I'm sorry - but odds are that you won't be able to activate it.

  • Multiple threads on these forums report problems with activating really old iPhones such as the 3GS.
  • iCloud now requires a minimum of iOS 12 for even basic services like backup and restore. That, in and of itself, doesn't mean that activation is impossible, but it certainly isn't a good sign.
  • Many carriers have shut off the 2G/3G networks on which the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S rely.

It sounds like the iPhone is carrier-locked ("SIMStatus: OperatorLocked"). I don't know if inserting a physical SIM for the carrier to whom the phone is locked will be enough to get activation working, but I get the impression that activation will almost certainly fail if there is no physical SIM or if the physical SIM is for some other carrier.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed reply. I really appreciate your help.

A few important details might help clarify my situation.

First, my iPhone 3GS ( I am still the first owner) was still working before I erased it. It had been stored safely for more than 15 years, but it powered on normally and was functioning. The activation problem only appeared after I selected "Erase All Content and Settings."

Second, I also own an iPhone 4S, which I was able to restore and activate successfully (yesterday) without any problems.

Regarding the possible carrier lock, I can confirm that Proximus (Belgium) was the original carrier of my iPhone 3GS and I am still the owner and the original SIM card is still in the iphone. I have already tried an active Proximus SIM card, as well as an active SIM from Telenet, using the appropriate SIM adapter. Unfortunately, activation failed in both cases.

I have also restored the iPhone 3GS through Finder using the original Apple iOS 6.1.6 firmware. The restoration process did not report an error code, and the device still correctly reports its IMEI and baseband firmware (05.16.08). However, activation continues to fail.

My main question is whether Apple's activation servers still fully support the iPhone 3GS in 2026, or whether this could be related to an old carrier-lock record or another compatibility issue.

Has anyone successfully activated an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.6 in 2025 or 2026, particularly after a complete factory reset?

If so, could you please share the exact procedure you followed? Any practical experience or technical insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your time and assistance. I would really love to bring this little piece of Apple history back to life!
