How to create voice-over videos from Keynote slides with a particular workflow

I would like to know if I can use a specific workflow to produce voice-over videos from keynote slides.

  • Each video is a precalculus lesson.
  • Each video will contain 20-30 Keynote slides and the voiceover will average about 60 seconds per slide.
  • Videos will be scripted.

  • I would like to produce the voice-over for each slide while stepping through objects on the slide.
  • I expect to be able to complete the voiceover for each slide in a single pass, but may need to re-do it if I change the script and/or slide to correct an error, revise wording, add material, etc.

  • I would like to add voice-over audio (and possibly music) to each slide and then "stitch" all the slides together to produce the video, thereby avoiding the need for traditional video editing.
  • If, after stitching all the slides together to produce a video, I need to change the voice-over for one or more slides I would like to do that for each of those slides and then re-stitch all the slides to form a revised video.
  • Unsurprisingly, I would like the stitching operation to be automated to the extent possible.
  • One option would be to produce a video for each slide and then stitch the videos.

  • If desired I could use iMovie, Final Cut Pro (which I would have to learn) and/or or specialized third-party software.

How can I do this or is there a better workflow?

I'm not sure what the difficulty is here - Keynote makes it easy to add voiceovers to slides.

There's actually two ways of doing it - either presentation-based (one audio stream that runs for the entire presentation), or as separate audio clips per slide. It sounds like what you want is the latter.

All you need to do is view each slide in turn and use Insert -> Record Audio. A pop-up window will appear with controls to start/stop the audio. Record the VoiceOver for each slide and when you're done it'll add to the slide. Rinse and repeat for each slide.

Now all you have to do is set the audio clips to auto-play when the slide starts (Inspector -> Audio -> Start Audio on Click -> Off)... that way you don't have to click to start the audio on each track.

Now when you play the presentation, each slide will have its own audio clip. If you export the presentation as a movie file, the VoiceOver should match, too.

And since each slide has its own audio clip, it's easy to delete and re-record any individual slide in case of timing or content changes.
