Choosing the Right AirPrint Printer for an Apple Household
With so many AirPrint-compatible printers available, the best approach is to establish your current needs and anticipate how they may change over the next three to five years before considering specific brands or models.
1. Current Printing Needs
2. Future Requirements
Consider whether printing volume, colour needs, photo quality, scanning, or paper-handling requirements may change. Avoid paying for features you are unlikely to need.
3. Apple Compatibility
For an iPhone, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, prioritize:
4. Essential Features
Determine whether you need automatic two-sided printing, colour, an automatic document feeder, multiple paper sizes, Ethernet, or a compact, quiet design.
5. Budget and Ownership Costs
Consider the purchase price in Your Region , ink or toner costs, cost per page, maintenance, warranty, and supply availability. Compare estimated total costs over three to five years.
6. Printer Categories
7. Final Recommendation
Compare a shortlist of models available in Your Region for AirPrint compatibility, print quality, required features, reliability, support, and total ownership costs.
The objective is to identify the printer that best meets your household's current and anticipated needs, not simply to choose a brand or the cheapest model.

Ask a generic question…
What we don't know for better advice:
Answers to the above would narrow our guesswork and any recommendation.
For instance, I had planned to purchase a Xerox color laser, and instead, purchased a Brother HL-L8430cdw color laser printer this past summer. Brother color replacement toner half of what Xerox charges. A $500 color laser for half the price of the intended Xerox model. Satisfied with the purchase decision.
Configured the Brother laser for Wi-Fi from the Brother Mobile Connect app on my iPhone and all Macs, iPhone and iPad can print to it. There are devices as low as $100 and up that may or may not meet your answers to the above question structure.
For an iPhone, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, prioritize:
You have identified a sensible starting point: a monochrome laser printer with reliable AirPrint and Wi-Fi support sounds like the category that best fits your needs.
The next step is to do a little research and put together a shortlist of two or three printers that are available in your region and fit your budget. Compare their features, toner costs, dimensions, warranty, manufacturer support, and confirmed AirPrint compatibility with your Apple devices and operating systems.
There are plenty of reviews and comparisons available online to help narrow the choices.
Once you have a shortlist, share the specific make and model numbers here.
Someone in the community may then be able to offer useful, firsthand feedback on the pros and cons of your shortlisted options, including reliability, ease of setup with Apple devices, print quality, and running costs.
That way, the discussion can focus on comparing actual candidates and helping you make an informed decision, rather than trying to choose a printer without knowing which models you are considering.

For an iPhone, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, prioritize:
Reliable AirPrint and Wi-Fi connectivity.
•
Verified compatibility with your versions of iOS and macOS, including Tahoe 26 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, as applicable.
•
Simple setup without unnecessary software.
•
Compatible scanning features, if required.
•
Ongoing firmware and manufacturer support.
Ok, so the choice has been narrowed down
Thanks. Old Canon printer back on track. So no need for now to get anything new.
