iPhone won’t connect to Apple Watch

I was given an Apple Watch Series 8 by a friend. I have an iPhone 12 updated to 27.2. The watch has been factory reset when I go to try to pair and start the initialization this occurs. I turn it on it try’s to pair with screen or code either leads to the issue. It connects then says an update is required. When I go to install it fails and says could not connect to Apple Watch. I’ve tried resetting, turning off both units, plugging in both units, toggling airplane mode. Nothing seems to work.

Please try this

Reset iPhone Network Settings

- This clears glitchy Bluetooth and Wi-Fi handshakes without deleting your personal data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and try pairing again.

Keep the Watch on its Charger

- Apple Watches often refuse to download or apply setup updates unless they are sitting physically on their magnetic charging puck. Make sure both the watch and the iPhone have high battery or are plugged in.

Since it was a gift, check that your friend removed it from their Apple Account (Find My > Devices, or account.apple.com), as Activation Lock can cause pairing trouble. For the failed update, keep the watch on its charger next to the iPhone, use stable Wi-Fi, and restart the iPhone first. Resetting network settings on the iPhone can help too.
