How can I turn off text suggestions in Apple Mail?

I have Siri and Apple Intelligence turned off as much as I can, but Apple Mail is still providing automatic suggestions. How can I turn it off? The previous community question said to turn off the switch in the "Apple Intelligence and Siri" menu, but the Apple Intelligence part is now gone; it only mentions Siri.

The setting you are looking for is separate from Siri and Apple Intelligence. You do not need to enable or disable Apple Intelligence to control predictive text in Apple Mail.

In macOS 27.0, Apple provides a separate system-wide setting for inline predictive text. This is managed through Keyboard settings, rather than the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings.

To turn off inline predictive text, open Apple menu  > System Settings > Keyboard. Under Text Input, click Edit. Look for Show inline predictive text and make sure it is turned OFF. Click Done to save the change.

This is the setting responsible for displaying suggested words or phrases in gray text as you type. These suggestions can appear in Apple Mail and other supported applications, independently of whether Siri or Apple Intelligence is enabled.

If you also want to prevent macOS from automatically changing words as you type, there are two additional settings worth checking in that same Keyboard > Text Input > Edit panel.

Make sure Correct spelling automatically is turned OFF if you do not want macOS automatically correcting your spelling. You can also turn off Capitalize words automatically if you do not want automatic capitalization.

There is also a Mail-specific setting worth checking. With Mail open, start a new message and look at the menu bar. Select Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Correct Spelling Automatically. If there is a checkmark beside this option, click it to turn automatic spelling correction off in Mail.

It is important to distinguish between predictive text, automatic spelling correction, and Apple Intelligence Writing Tools. They are separate features, with separate controls. Disabling Siri or Apple Intelligence does not necessarily disable the macOS keyboard's predictive text functionality.

If you have disabled the above settings and suggestions are still appearing, it would be helpful to identify exactly what you are seeing. For example, are the suggestions appearing as gray words completing your sentence, as a pop-up containing alternative words, or as suggested phrases appearing elsewhere in the Mail composition window? These are different behaviours and may require different troubleshooting.

The first article is particularly relevant because it documents the keyboard-level predictive text and autocorrection controls in macOS 27.
