Dynamic links to files on disc in Numbers

Hi ddweller151,

Numbers does not support links between documents. And I am glad. Many times, Excel users have sent me a document without the linking documents. What they see on their screen is not what I see in the unlinked document. Duh!

Thank you, Apple, for not linking Numbers documents. Links between Sheets in the same Numbers document work just fine.

Regards,

Ian.

Edit: we can link from a Numbers document to a Web page, Email, Phone Number, or another Sheet. But not another document on your device. But we can link to a document that was saved on a public website such as Dropbox.

Ian.

The short answer: never.

It has never been Apple's design goal for Numbers to become an Excel clone, and certain features of Excel will remain with it.

Numbers does support links to files stored in online services that allow you to copy item links.

For example, you can store a file in Dropbox and copy an item link from there into a cell in Numbers. When you click the link in Numbers the document will open.

A Numbers 15.4 cell link to a file on Apple's iCloud drive will open a new Finder window with the designated file selected, but does not further open it in the designated application for that file type.
