Fixing Disk Utility Error -69874 on an External Drive (macOS 27)
If you're trying to reformat an external drive on your MacBook Air M2 (2022) and Disk Utility keeps displaying this error:
Error: -69874: Couldn't modify partition map
It generally means macOS is unable to modify the drive's partition table. Possible causes include a corrupted partition map, write protection, connection issues, or an underlying hardware problem.
Here are a few things worth trying.
Step 1 Select the physical drive
First, make sure Disk Utility is targeting the entire external drive rather than just one of its volumes.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select View > Show All Devices.
- Select the external drive at the top of its hierarchy.
- Click Erase.
Click Erase and see whether the operation completes.
Apple's instructions: Initialize an external storage device in Disk Utility.
Step 2 Try formatting through Terminal
If Disk Utility continues to fail, try using Terminal.
Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and run: diskutil list
Find your external drive and note its disk identifier. For example: /dev/disk4 (external, physical):
In this example, the identifier is disk4.
To format the drive for Mac and Windows:
diskutil eraseDisk ExFAT External GPT /dev/disk4
For Mac-only use:
diskutil eraseDisk APFS External GPT /dev/disk4
Replace disk4 with your actual disk identifier.
Important: These commands erase the entire selected drive, including all existing partitions and files. Double-check the identifier and back up anything important before proceeding.
