The error message you are seeing pertains to unlocking your Mac with your Apple Watch.

When your MacBook Air says a wireless connection is too weak to unlock your Mac, it usually means your Apple Watch is having trouble communicating via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with your Mac to verify the unlock.

How to Fix It

  • Move your Apple Watch closer: Hold your watch or wrist closer to your MacBook Air when opening the lid (or if in clamshell mode, before pressing a keyboard key or touching the trackpad/mouse)

  • Toggle Apple Watch unlocking off and on:
  1. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Go to Touch ID & Password.
  3. Turn off Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac.
  4. Restart your MacBook Air.
  5. Go back into settings and turn the feature back on.

  • Check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi: Make sure both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for both your Mac and your Apple Watch (they must be signed into the same iCloud account with Two-Factor Authentication enabled).

  • Restart both devices: A quick reboot of your MacBook Air and your Apple Watch often clears out temporary handoff or connection glitches.
