iPad Pro M4 fails to download iPadOS update over Wi-Fi but starts with Ethernet.

iPad Pro M4 Cannot Download iPadOS 27.2 Over Wi-Fi, but Ethernet Starts the Update Process

I’m experiencing an unusual iPadOS update issue with my 13-inch iPad Pro (M4, 2TB).

When attempting to update from iPadOS 26.7.2 to iPadOS 27.2, the download repeatedly fails over Wi-Fi.

I tested multiple network connections and would like to share the results.

Device and Environment

  • Device: iPad Pro 13-inch (M4, 2024)
  • Storage: 2TB (approximately 1.6TB available)
  • Current OS: iPadOS 26.7.2
  • Target OS: iPadOS 27.2
  • Wi-Fi network: Starlink
  • VPN: Not connected

Network Test Results

Connection

Result

Starlink Wi-Fi

Download failed

iPhone 15 Personal Hotspot

Download failed

Ethernet (USB-C adapter)

Update process started

When using Wi-Fi, the following error appeared:

“An error occurred downloading iPadOS 27.2. Try again later.”

I then connected the iPad directly via a USB-C Ethernet adapter, with Wi-Fi turned off.

The update status changed to “Update Requested…” and a progress bar appeared.

The download and installation have not yet been confirmed as completed.

Interestingly, my iPhone 15 can update successfully using the same Starlink connection.

Questions

  1. Does iPadOS use different network handling for OTA updates over Wi-Fi and Ethernet?

  2. Could DNS resolution, IPv6 connectivity, or Apple CDN routing cause this behavior?

  3. Has anyone experienced a similar issue with an iPad Pro M4 and Starlink?

  4. Are there any known OTA download issues specific to iPadOS 27.2?

I have not identified the root cause yet.

I would appreciate any technical insights or reports from other users experiencing similar issues.

Thank you!

Low bandwidth or Satellite connections (such as Starlink) can significantly impact the ability to successfully perform an OTA system software update directly from iPad settings. VPN or installed security software (such as Norton/MacAfee) can also inhibit connection to Apple's regional update servers. If installed, any such software may need to be disabled and/or removed entirely.

If your iPad is capable of update to a more recent version of iOS/iPadOS than is currently installed, these support pages outline both the available methods by which the update can be performed - and troubleshooting should you experience difficulties:

Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, in some circumstances you may need to use a computer to perform the update*. To do so, you will need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed - or the more recent Apple Devices App) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Ensure that your installed version of iTunes has been updated to the most recent version; the essential device drivers are included.

If you have a beta profile installed, ensure this has been removed from your iPad - as, otherwise, installation of production software updates may be inhibited. This support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPad:

You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection. If enabled, ensure that Low Power Mode is turned OFF.

You said VPN Not Connected. But if it is installed, even if not connected, that is most likely the problem.

If you still have VPN installed delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting suggestions.

I would like to share the results of my investigation.

  • My iPhone 15 Pro Max successfully updated to iOS 26.2 over Starlink Wi-Fi.

  • My iPad Pro M4 (13-inch) initially had trouble downloading the iPadOS update over Wi-Fi.

  • The update eventually proceeded when I switched to an Ethernet connection.

  • No third-party security software is installed.

  • VPN and Cloudflare WARP (1.1.1.1) are both disabled.

  • I also checked the VPN configurations on both devices. Neither device had an active VPN connection.

Interestingly, the iPhone and iPad behaved differently despite using the same Starlink network.

This makes me wonder whether the issue is related to the iPadOS update process, network handling on the iPad, or communication with Apple’s regional update servers.

The iPad has now successfully updated, but I believe the underlying cause is still worth investigating.

Thank you again for your helpful suggestions.

Thank you, Lawrence.

I checked both VPN configurations on my iPad and iPhone.

Both devices have Cloudflare configurations installed, but VPN and WARP are disabled.

Interestingly, my iPhone 15 Pro Max successfully updated over the same Starlink Wi-Fi network, while my iPad Pro M4 only started the update after switching to Ethernet.

The iPadOS update has now completed successfully.

So I appreciate your suggestion, but I am not yet convinced that the VPN configuration was the cause.

Thank you for your input.

One additional detail from the Starlink statistics:

I checked the Events & Outages log.

The only event recorded in the last 24 hours was “Router rebooted” at 9:20 PM.

There were no other events listed in that period.

The Starlink statistics also showed:

  • Ping success: 99.8%
  • Median latency: 25 ms

I am sharing this additional information to help distinguish general network quality from a possible device-specific or update-process issue.

Thank you again for your assistance.
