Erratic mouse double-click problem

Hi all,

Lately I've been having a problem with my mouse double-click settings, the computer takes my single click as a double click numerous times causing quite an annoyance since the machine does what it wants and not what I want it to do. I tried making the mouse double-click speed slower, but it didn't make anything much of a difference at all, the problem still remains. Can I trash a .plist file to see if this problem gets resolved?

Thanks 🙂

Are you using an Apple Mouse or a third-party mouse? Posting the models either way would be helpful.

If you have the original Apple mouse that shipped with the eMac, there should a ring on the bottom that changes the movement required for a click to register. It has three positions, so try changing that setting. I've always found the original "Pro" mouse to be a little sensitive to a click anyway, and have replaced most of ours with Logitech multi-button mice.

Thanks for your reply,

I have the original Apple Logitech mouse. I don't really see any ring that you mention on the bottom of the mouse. The mouse has been fine for a very long time now, and it's only been recently that it's acted up like this. I do have this mouse from late February 2004 however. The mouses doesn't seem to have any other problems whatsoever.

The one I though it might be is this one:

Note the ring with the three faint dots at the top. Those are the detents for the adjustment. This design gave me problems because it clicked if it got pushed against the keyboard. The tapered edge would wedge under any overhang and have a click-fest.

As best as I can recall, my original eMac mouse lasted maybe a year before both the mouse tracking and the button contact switch began to act erratically. The button contact can wear out. If you still have your original eMac mouse, you've done an amazing job of treating it gently (maybe you can give me lessons --- I end up replacing mice every 2 years or so!).

Can you try another USB mouse? Any third-party three button USB mouse will work as a basic three-button mouse without needing any additional software to be loaded; e.g., the Logitech Prefernce Pane offers more control over features of their mice, but you can do without it and just plug the mouse in.

I've developed this same problem. Very frustrating. Things I've tried, using the supplied mouse instead of my Logitech, reset PRAM, creating new user without any login items, running DiskWarrior, Cocktail and now pulling my hair out. Nothing has helped. I'm beginning to think this is hardware motherboard issue...

Hi Guest,
each mouse has the No. of clicks pre-determined from the factory. The 'normal' mouse is able to produce between 2 ~ 4 Milion clicks.(This depends on the design & quality on materials being used).
The well designed Mouse will last 8 ~ 12 Mil.
So as you can see it doesn't depend on "I have this Mouse since...", but how many times you have used it...

I agree; it isn't the mouse. I have two magic mice and a wired kensington (for emergencies) and all three devices exhibit the same behaviour: they all doube-click when I single-click.

I've also been having to put up with this issue for some months now and it's beginning to wind me up.

I'm running on a MacBook Pro (Model Id: MacBookPro5,2) running OS X 10.6.6.

Please, Apple, acknowledge this problem and give us some feedback.

Thanks,
Iain.

Same problem. Have tried different mice, no change.

This just started happening within the last couple months. At first I just assumed I was accidentally double-clicking. But clearly it is something other than that because it happens frequently now. It is infuriating to have apps launch every time you click once on a file to move it or possibly change the name.

This is happening to me as well. I know it's not the mouse (Magic Mouse in my case) as it worked perfectly until I upgraded to a new Mac Pro this morning. Is this a Bluetooth issue? RAM issue? I've got the standard 6GB. Also seems to be intermittent... even happens with no applications running (other than the Finder). Repaired permissions, restarted, etc...
