Is it safe to use a Mac Studio in a vertical position?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Mac Studio with the M4 Max chip (36GB RAM), and I've been experimenting with my desk setup.

To save desk space, I've placed my Mac Studio vertically on its side instead of using it in its standard horizontal position.

The Mac is stable in this position, and none of its ports or ventilation openings are physically obstructed. However, I couldn't find clear information from Apple about whether using the Mac Studio vertically is supported or recommended.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is it safe to operate a Mac Studio in a vertical position for extended periods?
  2. Could its orientation affect the cooling system, fan bearings, or internal components over time?
  3. Does Apple recommend keeping the Mac Studio in its standard horizontal position?

I've also performed a GPU-intensive Blender Cycles render lasting approximately 3 minutes and 23 seconds. The thermal pressure remained at "Nominal" throughout the test, and I didn't notice any significant increase in fan noise.

I'd appreciate any information from Apple or users who have experience running their Mac Studio vertically.

Thank you!

The usual problem re-orienting computers is from diminishing the 'chimney effect', when the computer was originally designed to use the chimney effect for cooling.

The Mac Studio and Mac Mini do NOT rely on chimney effect cooling, and can therefore be used in any orientation including upside-down, as long as there is no constriction of exit air or intake air.
