Crunchyroll video playback fails on M4 Mac mini

Crunchyroll video playback fails on my M4 Mac Mini's but not on my M1 Mac Mini or my M1 MacBook Air

All four computers are running Golden Gate 27.2

I have Cleared the Cache and History - No change.

I have rebooted the system - No Change.

Here it the error I am being given:

—————

Not Available

We're having trouble loading this video. Please be patient as we work to resolve the issue.

KAT-6005

—————

I have tried several different videos and receive the same error.

What I find interesting is the M1 computer's don't have the issue while the M4's do

I have an M4 with 16megs and an M4 Pro with 24megs.

All four computers are on the same network.

Any suggestions are welcome (as long as they aren't, you should use Chrome.)

Hi,

If you are experiencing video playback failure or a "black screen with audio only" on Crunchyroll using your new M4 Mac mini, the issue is almost always caused by HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) handshaking failures over your display connection, or browser-level hardware acceleration conflicts.

Here are the most effective ways to fix the problem, ordered from most likely to least likely:

1. Fix the HDMI / Display Cable (Most Common for Mac mini)

Mac mini users frequently hit HDCP blocks because Crunchyroll treats Safari and macOS browsers with strict DRM restrictions.

  • Switch your cable: If your M4 Mac mini is connected via a standard HDMI-to-HDMI cable, try switching to a USB-C to DisplayPort or USB-C to HDMI cable instead. Users frequently report that routing video through the Thunderbolt/USB-C ports bypasses the HDMI DRM glitch.
  • Disconnect secondary monitors: If you are running a dual-monitor setup and one of your displays is older or not HDCP-compliant, macOS may completely block the video stream on both screens. Unplug one monitor to test.
  • Turn off screen capture software: If you have Discord screen sharing, OBS, or any video-capturing software open in the background, Crunchyroll will intentionally black out the video player to prevent piracy.

2. Disable Hardware Acceleration (For Chrome / Edge / Firefox)

If you are streaming on a browser other than Safari, the M4 chip's graphical architecture can sometimes conflict with the browser's video decoding rendering engine.

  • Google Chrome: Go to Settings > System > toggle off Use graphics acceleration when available, then click Relaunch.
  • Firefox: Go to Settings > General > scroll down to Performance > uncheck Use recommended performance settings > uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.

3. Check for Interfereing Extensions (Ad Blockers)

Crunchyroll's video player actively blocks or breaks when certain browser extensions are running, resulting in endless loading spinners or failed playback.

  • Try opening an Incognito / Private window and logging into Crunchyroll.
  • If the video plays perfectly there, your main browser extensions are the culprit. Turn off ad-blockers or whitelist crunchyroll.com.

4. Clear Site Data & Cache

Corrupted cache data from migrating files to your new M4 Mac mini can cause modern player errors.

  • Perform a hard refresh on the Crunchyroll tab by pressing Shift + Cmd + R.
  • Alternatively, go into your browser settings, search for "Cookies and site data", locate Crunchyroll, and clear it completely.
