iPhone 16 Pro Lock Screen clock appearance changes unexpectedly

Hi! I'm looking for help with a Lock Screen customization issue on my iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 27.2.

I've noticed that the Lock Screen clock has two different visual appearances, even though all of its customization settings remain exactly the same.

When I switch to a different Lock Screen wallpaper, the clock initially appears in a thin, outlined, almost wireframe-style Liquid Glass appearance. I actually really like this appearance and would prefer to keep it permanently.

However, as soon as I enter the Home Screen and return to the Lock Screen, the clock changes to its normal, filled, frosted-glass appearance. The font, size, color, and Glass opacity settings are identical in both appearances. The only thing that changes is how the clock itself is visually rendered.

I've done some testing to narrow down the cause:

  • The outlined appearance happens with all of my Lock Screen wallpapers, not just one.
  • Opening Control Center and returning to the Lock Screen does NOT change the clock. It stays outlined.
  • Entering the Home Screen and then returning to the Lock Screen ALWAYS causes it to change to the filled Glass appearance.
  • Restarting my iPhone does not change this behavior. The outlined appearance is present when I first access the Lock Screen after restarting, but disappears after entering the Home Screen.
  • My Glass opacity is already set to its minimum.
  • I've also tested changing the Accessibility settings, including Increase Contrast and Show Borders, but neither affects the behavior.
  • Turning Always On Display off also makes no difference.

I'm wondering if this is related to how iOS renders the Liquid Glass clock during different screen transitions, or if there is a way to select the outlined appearance as a permanent customization option.

To clarify, I'm not necessarily reporting a malfunction. Both appearances work, but I strongly prefer the outlined version and would like to know if there's a way to make it permanent, or if Apple could potentially offer it as an additional clock appearance option.

Thank you!

On iOS, the appearance of the Clock on the Lock Screen can change depending on the wallpaper you have selected. This is part of Apple's customisation feature, designed to complement the wallpaper and provide a visually appealing appearance.

If you have enabled the Photo Shuffle option with an hourly or daily wallpaper change, the Clock's appearance may also adapt as the wallpaper changes. Its font style, size, colour and positioning can vary to maintain a harmonious look with the selected photograph.

Even when you select photographs directly from your Photos library, iOS intelligently adjusts the Clock's appearance to accommodate the subject and composition of each image. For example, the Clock may appear larger, smaller or in a different position so that it does not unnecessarily obscure important parts of the photograph. Where supported, the Depth Effect can also make the subject of the photograph appear in front of the Clock.

The objective is to ensure that you get the best possible view of your wallpaper while maintaining the readability of the Clock.

In short: The Lock Screen Clock is not necessarily static. Its appearance can be customised and, with certain wallpaper features such as Photo Shuffle, may adapt to the selected photograph to provide a more aesthetically pleasing Lock Screen experience.

Note: Not every aspect changes automatically with every wallpaper. Some options, such as font, size and colour, can also be manually customised by tapping the Clock while editing the Lock Screen.

Please refer to the image below. The first wallpaper selection screen demonstrates how the Lock Screen clock dynamically adjusts its size based on the chosen photograph.
