Apple made two 27" displays that people sometimes mix up. Both have hydra cables where the video "head' uses a Mini DisplayPort connector.

They require different kinds of signals.

  • The Apple Thunderbolt Display has a hydra cable with two heads: Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort connector) and MagSafe. It requires Thunderbolt input. So it will work with an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter, but not with a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort one.
  • LED Cinema Display (27-inch) has a hydra cable with three heads: Mini DIsplayPort, USB-A, and MagSafe. This display requires DisplayPort input. So it will work with a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter but won't work if you plug it directly into an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter. (You may also need to connect the USB hydra head.)
