seeking more iOS-compatible word processing replacement for Word

I used to be able to cut and paste text from Mac emails into Word no problem. Now, regardless of different Paste options, it no longer works. Which other word processing software is more compatible in iOS ecosystem? I use word processing a lot.

How compatible is Pages w the business world that uses PCs and other non OS devices? I guess you just always save it in PC compatible option?

Not very. It can save in MS Office formats, but any even moderately complex formatting won't translate properly between the two.

Maybe you'd like to actually explain what the problem is with word, and what version of word you're running that is having problems.

I use Microsoft Office on my Macs all the time and have no issues to speak of.

Apple Pages is the most compatible word processing software within the iOS and Mac ecosystem. Because it is built natively by Apple, it integrates seamlessly with macOS and iOS system clipboard have been reported for Microsoft Word on Apple devices.

When copying and pasting from Mac emails (Apple Mail or Outlook) to Word stops working, the issue usually stems from a stalled macOS clipboard process (pboard), a frozen Word application state, or a rich-text data conflict. Personally, I have no issues pasting text from Mail into Word.

How to Fix It…

Restart the Mac Clipboard Process (pboard):

  • Open Activity Monitor (via Spotlight or Applications > Utilities), type pboard in the search bar, select the pboard process, and click the X button to force quit it. macOS will restart it automatically.
  • Alternatively, open the Terminal app and run: killall pboard.

Restart Microsoft Word and Your Mac:

  • Completely quit Word by pressing Command + Q (do not just close the window) and reopen it.
  • If that fails, restart your MacBook from the Apple menu (top-left) to clear system-level memory and clipboard buffers.

Use "Paste and Match Style":

  • Instead of standard Command + V, try pasting using Option + Shift + Command + V. This strips out complex email formatting/tables that might be crashing Word's rich-text parser.
  • You can also check your cut-and-paste preferences in Word by going to Word > Preferences > Edit (or Cut and Paste Options) to adjust how text blends.

  • Check for Office Updates:
  • In Word, go to the top menu and select Help > Check for Updates to install pending Microsoft 365 or Office patches
  • The current version of Microsoft Word for Mac (as part of Microsoft 365) is Version 16.114.3.

To think along different lines, for me 98% of what I do with word processing is write. Almost all my writings are stored as TextEdit files in plain .txt format. If I need to pretty them then I use the free Bean application which has the option to store as a Word format, or various other formats. I also have Pages which, frankly, I have never opened since I like to use a format that is as cross-platform compatible as possible (anything made since almost day one of computing can open .txt), and LibreOffice which I use once or twice per year. Actually I have LibreOffice mostly for when others send me Word files and I need to collaborate with them.

It would be better to solve the problem than to replace the word processing app.

Pls. start by telling us what version of macOS is on your MBPro and what version of MS Word you are using.

Three quick thoughts ...

  • If you are using the MS 365 version of Word, are you signed in to your MS 365 account (you do that in Word or any of the other MS 365 apps). If you are not signed in, you cannot edit any of the MS 365 apps. That would include not being able to paste into a Word document.
  • If you recently updated or upgraded macOS on your MBPro you may also need to update MS 365 / MS Word. Check Word > Help > Check for Updates to see if there is an available update.
  • Can you copy/paste from other apps into a Word document or between two Word documents?

I just selected, copied and pasted (cmd+C/cmd+V) the text content of an email from Apple Mail on macOS 27.2 into a blank Word 2024 (16.114.3) document with formatting and links preserved. No corrective reformatting needed in the pasted content.

Apple's Pages is not a Word clone. It must translate Word documents on open into the Pages document format, and again on export to Word. The original Word document is uneditable in Pages, and Apple does not guarantee the accuracy of the translation process that may also reject Word documents with too many unsupported Word features in them. I have never recommended Pages as a corporate replacement for MS Word.

The price is right for the free LibreOffice Suite, which is purposely an MS Office clone with reasonably good MS document compatibility. Its derivation stems from StarOffice which was developed in the 1990s and LibreOffice has continued to evolve with frequent updates. Here is a compatibility matrix between the current release of the LibreOffice Suite and MS Office 2024/365. Sometimes, LibreOffice Writer can open Word documents that Apple's Pages fails to open. There is extensive LibreOffice Suite documentation (PDF) that is also written in LibreOffice Writer.

Another MS Office clone is SoftMaker's Office 2026 suite that is also a deliberate clone of MS Office. Far less expensive than MS Office, with a familiar interface, vendor support, and MS document compatibility. Softmaker has available documentation.
