How do I resolve recurring directional/orientation issues with Magic Trackpad gestures on iPad Pro M4?

Hello,

This issue has been mentioned in several discussions, but I don't think the underlying problem has been properly articulated. Some existing discussions also have replies disabled, so I'm opening a new thread.

When using an external Apple Magic Trackpad with an iPad, performing three- or four-finger gestures appears to trigger a change in the trackpad's directional orientation or behavior.

I've seen suggestions to disable accessibility settings such as Reduce Motion, perform a hard reset, or install the latest iPadOS version. In my case, the relevant accessibility settings have always been disabled.

A reboot or reset might temporarily restore normal behavior, but that doesn't resolve the underlying problem. As soon as I resume using three- or four-finger gestures, the issue returns.

This is particularly frustrating for people who regularly switch between an iPad and a MacBook Pro. Muscle memory makes switching between the two devices second nature, and having to continually compensate for inconsistent trackpad behavior defeats the purpose of using Apple's ecosystem.

Device configuration:

  • iPad Pro 13-inch M4
  • Apple Magic Trackpad
  • iPadOS 26.6.2

I've experienced this behavior since day one with this iPad.

I'm looking for an actual explanation and, ideally, a software-level resolution. Specifically:

  1. Is there a known issue with how iPadOS handles >3 (three- and four-finger, etc) gestures when an external Magic Trackpad is connected?
  2. Is there a conflict between iPadOS and macOS gesture handling that causes the trackpad's directional mapping or orientation to change?
  3. Is there a persistent configuration or software fix that prevents this from happening, rather than temporarily restoring normal behavior through a reboot or reset?

Please avoid suggesting that I simply update iPadOS, restart the device, or perform a factory reset. Those approaches don't address the recurring nature of the problem.

This appears to be a software or gesture-handling issue that deserves investigation at the operating-system level.

I'd appreciate input from anyone who has experienced the same behavior, particularly if they've found a reproducible solution.

Thank you.

First, consider updating your iPad to the most recent version of iPadOS. At the time of writing, iPadOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 27.2 are current.

As for external Magic TrackPad gestures, I have not encountered any issues whatsoever with two, three and four-finger gestures - or tracking in general. Here are links to the iPad User Guide - and the sections that describe available trackpad gestures:

If you can describe a specific and repeatable sequence of actions, I can try to replicate your issue.

Otherwise, If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

You might otherwise consider seeking assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You obviously didn't read anything I wrote because you did exactly what I asked you to NOT do.

As I mentioned: I've been updating and it doesn't help and reset doesn't help. The reset it a bandaid. I've had this iPad since Spring of 2025, it's been ongoing since then.

The fact that you didn't read what I wrote and posted exactly what I asked you not to post leads me to believe that you're a bot or something. Please don't respond to my messages again.

How rude.

No, I am not a "bot".

Yes I took the time to craft a full reply - mindful of your comments - and given that you have not already updated to current software, I suggested that you update your iPad to the current/supported version of iPadOS.

It is not rude, you didn’t read and follow directions by advising me to do exactly what I asked you to not do.

Your message added no value. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re agentic AI.

Regardless, thank you for refraining from further responding to this post.

Please in the future respect the OP and their message and respond in kind.
