iPhone 17 Pro experiencing unusually high battery drain

I bought my iPhone 17 Pro about a month ago and the battery drain is unusually high for a new device. On days with mixed use (Safari, WhatsApp, music, Instagram, some Google Maps, a darts scoring app), I lose roughly 14-24 % battery per hour of screen-on time. Examples:

  • 80 % in 4h20 screen time

  • 72 % in 4h30

  • 68 % in 3h30

  • 58 % in 4h

  • 47 % in 2h

Other users report around 9 hours of screen time on 80 %. Drain also fluctuates strongly, e.g. 5 % in 10 minutes on Instagram. I tried restarting and checked the battery settings.

Screen Time is not an accurate indicator of Battery Usage for any sort of comparison. Of course Meta is going to be using your battery, and that occurs even when you are not using your device. They let you use their app for free in exchange for the data harvesting to sell your activities to advertisers. You are the product being sold and that is how they report billions of dollars in revenue each quarter. Compound that with the frequency of the Meta updates to continually resolve bugs introduced in a previous update and you can see how that cycle continues.

You can post the screenshot at Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage and include the 2 battery graphs and the top 6 apps consuming your battery. That will be much more informative than any Screen Time value.

Also after an update, you should expect background processes being performed on your phone that will drain the battery and produce extra heat for about 4-5 days after the update. To ensure those processes are allowed to complete after an update, it is best to plug your phone into power and connected to WiFi all night, every night and use the Optimized Charging option. If you are seeing a high level of battery usage under the Home & Lock Screen category, that is a good indicator that those background processes are still being performed.

As far as testing the apps, it is simple to uninstall them and compare your results. During that time while the app, such as Instagram, is not on your device you can access that service on the web using Safari and that will not drain as much of your battery as using the app.

WhatsApp has been updated 18 times in the last 30 days. Does that sound normal to you? The most recent update was this afternoon, 3 hours ago. The previous update was 3 days ago on Friday afternoon.

Instagram is marginally better with 10 updates in last month. The most recent update was, you guessed it, today.

Meta support recommends backing up your app’s data, deleting the app and then downloading and installing a fresh copy of the app from the Apple App Store. Lastly restore your data.

Meta really doesn’t care about your battery usage when using their apps. I run several large social media groups on Meta platforms and when I spend hours on their platforms, my battery life suffers immensely.

Go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using energy. Both WhatsApp and Insta are energy hogs (actually, all Meta apps are energy hogs, in addition to being unstable).

But you should not limit charge to 80%; you should enable Optimized Battery Charging and charge overnight, every night. And while you are charging overnight also enable automatic iCloud backup, (and upgrade your iCloud to 50GB for 99¢ a month). These settings are in Settings/[your name]/iCloud.
