Siri randomly activating itself when driving

I have just purchased a new to me car and when driving Siri constantly activates itself, either on bends, turning, changing gear...seems to make no difference and there is no pattern.

Iphone 17 Pro Max with Quadlock case and matching screen mount and mag charger. Cigarette charger/FM modulator.

I have even placed the phone on the seat and it still went off. It's incredibly annoying.

Had exactly the same setup in my previous car and just moved everything across, but never experienced it before.

Any thoughts as it's driving me potty (pardon the pun)?

Thanks

iPhones can detect the movement of a car using a combination of sensors and algorithms. One of the primary sensors used for this purpose is the accelerometer. The accelerometer is a built-in hardware component that measures acceleration forces, including gravity and changes in velocity. When a car moves, accelerates, decelerates, or changes direction, the accelerometer detects these changes in acceleration.

Here's how the iPhone detects the movement of a car:

  1. The iPhone's accelerometer measures acceleration in three dimensions: X, Y, and Z. When a car accelerates or decelerates, the accelerometer detects the change in these acceleration values. This information is then used to infer movement and changes in speed.
  2. Some iPhones also include a gyroscope, which measures the device's orientation and rotation. While this sensor is not the primary detector of car movement, it can contribute to understanding the device's positioning and changes in direction.
  3. The iPhone's GPS (Global Positioning System) and other location-based services play a role in detecting movement as well. When you're in a moving car, the iPhone's GPS can track changes in your geographical position, speed, and direction. Apps that use location services, such as navigation apps, can access this data to provide real-time information about your movement.

Apps and features that utilize this sensor data can provide various functionalities, such as fitness tracking, augmented reality experiences, navigation, and more. However, keep in mind that the accuracy and effectiveness of these sensors can vary based on the iPhone model and the specific conditions in which they are used.

If by "detect movement of the car" you mean you do not want your iPhone to register vehicle movement, there are several possibilities depending on what feature is detecting it:

If Fitness/Health is counting movement

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Motion & Fitness.
  • Turn off Fitness Tracking.
  • You can also disable access for specific apps that use motion data.

If Maps automatically detects driving

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  • Review location access for Maps, Google Maps, and other navigation apps.
  • Set access to While Using the App or Never as appropriate.

If Driving Focus turns on automatically

  • Go to Settings > Focus > Driving.
  • Under Turn On Automatically, select Manually or disable automation.

If Significant Locations is tracking places you visit

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations.
  • Turn it off if you do not want iPhone learning your travel patterns.

If you want the iPhone to detect no movement at all

  • Enable Airplane Mode and turn off Motion & Fitness.
  • Note that built-in motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) still detect movement internally, but apps will have limited access to that data.

What exactly is detecting the car movement (Health app, Maps, Driving Focus, CarPlay, Find My, automation, or another app) is not clear from your post.

Hi and thanks for your reply. There is no pattern to it but it ‘pings’ and the pink surround to the screen appears and whatever is playing through Bluetooth pauses. As would be the case if I’d given a Siri voice command. It may happen every 30 seconds, maybe every couple of minutes. It has never done this previously, only when I transferred to a different car.
