Siri “listening for response”

How can I make siri stop listening for response after announcing notifications? It’s incredibly frustrating when I’m working with my AirPods in and trying to talk to people. I turned off “hey siri” for a reason, but now I still have this.

Also try Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and turn it off (or off for headphones only). Announced notifications are what open that listening window for a reply. If you want to keep announcing, turn off Reply Without Confirmation on the same screen so Siri doesn't wait for you.

Reply to notifications

For apps in which you can send a reply, such as Messages, you can reply to the notifications that Siri announces on compatible headphones or in a vehicle that supports CarPlay:

  1. Wait for Siri to read the notification. Siri then listens for your reply.
  2. Tell Siri that you’d like to reply, then speak your message. Say something like "Reply 'I'm on my way'" or "Tell her 'I'll meet you there'". When you stop talking, Siri reads your reply back to you and asks if you want to send it.

You can also use head gestures to reply to notifications.

Unfortunately, Apple does not currently provide a separate setting to make Siri automatically stop listening immediately after announcing a notification while keeping the announcement feature enabled.

You have these options:

  • Disable Announce Notifications: Settings → Notifications → Announce Notifications → turn it off.
  • Limit announcements to specific apps: Settings → Notifications → Announce Notifications → select the apps you want Siri to announce notifications from.

It is a function of Announce Notification to listen for a reply, but the Reply Without Confirmation setting has nothing to do with Siri listening after that notification has been sent. That setting is for after you reply where normally Siri reads back your message and asks if you want to send it, and with it on the reply is sent without asking you.
