Email draft disappeared in Mail app on iPad Air

I'm using the Apple Magic Keyboard case with my iPad Air 11".

This morning I was composing an email (in the Apple Mail app) using it, and the document suddenly disappeared. I suspect I inadvertently may have touched the trackpad while I was typing.

Now the letter-in-progress has completely vanished. I investigated all of the usual suspects: outbox, drafts, sent mail, spam, and trash in each of my mail accounts. The unfinished email was nowhere to be found.

What happened to it?

iPad Air, iPadOS 27

Sorry about the lost draft. A few places worth checking before you give up on it: In Mail, touch and hold the compose button (the square-and-pencil icon). If Mail saved a recent draft, it shows up in a list there. Tap Mailboxes at the top left, tap Edit, and tick All Drafts so you can see drafts from every account in one place. Also look at the Trash or Deleted Items folder of the specific account you were using, since an accidental swipe or tap can discard a draft in a way that doesn't show in Drafts. If the account is iCloud, Gmail or similar, sign in to its webmail on a computer and check Drafts and Trash there. Going forward, if a draft vanishes right after you touch the screen, swiping down on the compose window (instead of tapping Cancel > Delete Draft) keeps it in Drafts. Did the email disappear while the app was still open, or after you switched apps?
