iPad in bed: Help

I read lying on my left side at the edge of the bed. With Kindle the "book" would just drop to the floor, turn itself off and wait for me to wake up. I could hold the book in my left hand easily until I fell asleep.

The iPad is too heavy to hold in one hand for more than a few minutes and puts too much strain on my wrist. I have searched endlessly for a solution to this "nodding off" problem without success.

It seems a simple solution using an "x" shaped back strap would allow me to read with the weight redistributed across my hand (and not just my wrist) and would gently allow the book to fall to the floor when I nod off. But is there such a simple invention? If there is, can anybody help me find it (or invent it)?

I'm surprised you haven't received more comments about the whole falling asleep and letting the iPad fall onto the floor thing. That might work fine for a cheap, all-plastic little Kindle, but an iPad is very different. Your iPad is basically one big piece of glass. You absolutely should not treat it the same way you've been treating your Kindle! If it falls on the floor over and over, it's only a matter of time before it takes a bad fall and breaks, and that's assuming you've got heavy carpet on the floor. If the floor is hard, one fall is probably all it will take to shatter the screen. Further, if it doesn't fall, you may easily roll on it or something and snap the glass.

If you absolutely must continue with this behavior, stick with the Kindle for bedtime reading, and use your iPad for other things.

When I had to stay in bed for long periods of time, I used a Wizard iPad stand. It's about $75 IIRC and is completely hands free and raises your iPad up kind of like a TV tray, but at any height or angle. It was a life saver because I could still work while I was waiting for my knee to heal. This and a good VNC app and practically like sitting at the computer.

Now that I'm on my feet again I got a new device that converts between a hand strap and a sturdy stand. It's my new favorite for bed and it's just $25. I got it for the hand strap, but was really surprised and impressed with the stand. Anyway, I'll resist raving on about it and let you read a review instead.
