Ping on iPhone

This morning I downloaded iTunes 10 but did not sync my iPhone. Now, when I check my iPhone, I see that Ping is on iTunes app.

How did it get there if I didn't sync and I didn't get an authorisation screen/update etc. My iPhone has been on and powered for 2-days, i.e. preceding the announcement.

Macbook Core2Duo 2.0Ghz, 10.6.4, iMac 2.4hz, 4GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iMac G3 400 10.4.11; iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

This may not be completely accurate, but I think of the iOS iTunes app is like a customized web browser that is just for iTunes.

You basically download the interface whenever you use the app, and thus, Apple can change the interface by changing what they serve to you. Since they know who you are, regardless if you synced or not, and can tell you downloaded iTunes 10, they know to include Ping in what they serve to you on the iPhone.

That's at least the way I think it works.

I also saw "ping" on my iphone 4 which Apple was saying was a feature that appeared with 4.1. I had ping on my iphone before I installed 4.1. But just today, I looked for ping again in itunes on the iphone and it is gone. I'm searching forums, and have not yet found anyone else writing about not being able to find Ping on my iphone. So I'm putting the question out there if anyone else knows what's going on with ping on the iphone?
