iTunes 10 not playing music

Hi all!

I just upgraded to iTunes 10 and no music is playing either in my library or in the iTunes store whatsoever. iTunes recognizes the length of the song, and I can move the progress bar, but hitting play results in not playing. The progress bar doesn't move, and the song is not playing. Before you mention it... YES, I'm sure the player is not on "pause" or "stop". 🙂

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, and tried the "forget all remotes" process that other forums had mentioned, but nothing appears to be working.

Help pls! (I'm running Vista 32-bit)

In iTunes use Edit > Preferences > Playback and look at the entry for Play Audio Using. This will normally be set to either Direct Sound or Windows Audio Session. Changing the setting may help. If not change back to the original value and try once more. Failing that see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates and in particular the second box for a full tear down and rebuild.

Just as a heads up guys: iTunes when it updates carries over any problems from previous versions. Best cure: Backup your iTunes library, then totally remove iTunes. A normal un-install of iTunes will NOT work, if you can find software to 100% remove iTunes from your computer then re-install it. Doing so will do a PROPER clean install, hopefully removing any problems arising from problems carried over from previous versions.

Apple should include a feature to do a complete wipe of an old version to install a new one, but only if the user asks, (if iTunes has been playing up.) Kinda like a repair feture.

I'm having a similar problem. iTunes 9 played all my music. iTunes 10 can't seem to play some mp3s. Most do, but a sizable amount can't be played. They're in my library (because they were in iTunes 9), but can't be played. All info is still there also. I:
- removd a song and reimportd it. It couldn't even be imported!
- uninstalled iTunes, downloaded it fresh, and installed. Problem persists.

I guess I might have to try and completely uninstall iTunes with some tool, but that's time-consuming, annoying, and not an option for non-technical users (who said Apple was so user-friendly?).

I didn't like the last couple of versions of iTunes (but locked in because I have an iPod), but this is definitely something to go insane over. If this isn't fixed quickly, I'm switching to Zune.

Hey,

You're not alone on this one. I have a macbook pro running the latest build of OSX, 10.6.4, and the very same thing is happening to it as well. The song is selected and the play icon is displayed but there is no sound and the scrub pointer is stationary with a time of 0:00.

My only consolation is that even the most expensive, knowledgeable, and disciplined human endeavour can fail. Now how much patience do you have??

I am sure that Apple will fix it. The sooner the better!

hmm... let's just hope this isn't a hack;)

Alright,

I fixed it. If you can call it that!!

It is not very technical or laborious. Actually anyone can pull it off but to be precise you would have to live in Canada... make that Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

All I did was walk over to Write-Impressions and purchased four cards and then picked up some milk at the local grocer. Specifically organic milk. Walked home and hit play. And, voila, the sound started bouncing off my walls, floor and ceiling.

Still stumped.. but at least I can hear Louis Armstrong in the background.

Sorry, I know, it wasn't much help but hopefully this was a long enough distraction to put a smile on your frown; even for a second or two.

(ok, ok... my guess was low memory as I only have 2GB and I had a bunch of programs open when the inaction occurred. I force quit itunes and then reopened to auditory bliss)
